HWX and ISX Optical Link

This document describes the proper methods and procedures to be performed in

order to achieve optimum performance from the ADC Homeworx optical
transport system.

The headend RF carriers drive or ”modulate” the laser optical output. The
quality of the headend RF output and the laser drive level will determine the
transmitter performance. Each transmitter is individually optimized at the factory
and shipped in the default mode.( Factory-Set AGC).

Optical Transmitter Setup

1.) Power on the transmitter and connect a Personal Computer to the

PS/Controller Module DB9 connector via an RS-232 cable. Initiate the
HWX Contol Panel Software program and verify each DFB transmitter is
operating within its parameters. Operating instructions for the HWX
Control Panel Software can be found in ADC document #060784.

2.) Connect an optical power meter to the transmitter and record the power
output in dBm. Clean all optical connectors with wipes, isopropyl alcohol
and compressed air, DLP-304. Connect the transmitter to the fiber optic
distribution system.

3.) Connect the headend signals to the transmitter’s RF input and record the
RF carrier levels from the transmitter test point and the transmitter RF
LEVEL window readings in the software. These levels will be typically
1 or 2dB less than the actual measured RF input. The software RF
LEVEL window reading is based on the total average RF input power
of the total number of channels applied to the RF input.

Verify the headend output level flatness to be +/-0.5dB.

Customer Service Applications Note
Optimizing for channel load.

The channel load contributes to the optimum laser drive level. The laser is
factory adjusted for 112 unmodulated carriers. If fewer than 112 unmodulated
channels are to be transmitted the following formula is used to determine the
drive level.

X=15+(10*log(112/Y))

X= RF level in dBmV
Y= # of channels

The total power present or the composite power applied to the laser is indicated
by the HWX Control Panel Software. The window labeled RF LEVEL will display
a 15 when the proper drive level is applied to a 110 channel transmitter and 17
on an 80 channel transmitter.

110 Channel Transmitters 80 Channel Transmitters

HX-8Lxx-DT5-xxx
HX-8Lxx-DT6-xxx

Optimizing for modulated carriers:

When substituting modulated carriers for an equal load of unmodulated carriers

you must increase the signal levels applied to the transmitter by 3dB.
Modulated carriers reduce the total average power transmitted by laser and as a
result the software window “RF LEVEL” will decrease by 3dB. By increasing
the input signal level, the drive level applied to laser will again be optimized. The
following formula can be used when calculating the RF level for modulated
carriers.
X=18+(10*Log(112/Y))

Example:
Determine the required RF input carrier levels for a 80 channel load,

Customer Service Applications Note
112/80 log * 10 = 1.5, 1.5 + 15 = 16.5.
The proper RF input level to the transmitter for a 80 Channel Unmodulated
Channel Load is +16.5dBmV. For modulated channels add 3dB for a per carrier
level of +19.5dBmV. The transmitter input RF carrier level range is +14dBmV to
+22dBmV.

Transmitter Modes of Operation

The HWX series of transmitters offer three modes of operation.

1. Factory Preset AGC Mode (default)
2. Custom AGC Mode (user defined)
3. Fixed Gain Mode, No AGC (user defined)

Factory Preset AGC Mode

The Factory Preset AGC mode is the preferred mode of operation, it is

essentially plug and play. The AGC range is +/-3dB.

Transmitter CUSTOM table:

The Custom table function allows the user to optimize the AGC operating range
if the transmitters input is not at the specified range. This function allows the user
to customize the operating range of the AGC at some point other than the factory
determined optimum drive level.

Transmitter FIXED GAIN table:

5
ADC Broadband Communications, A Division of ADC Telecommunications, Inc.
ADC Broadband Communications reserves the right to change this information without notice.
Customer Service Applications Note
The Fixed gain table disables the AGC function. Any change in the transmitter
input RF level will be seen through the entire optical link. The output of the
receiver will change by the same amount.

Optimizing link performance

It will be necessary to determine the acceptable range of C/N, CSO, and CTB for
the System End of Line. Optimization is accomplished by changing the laser
drive level by adjusting the either the Custom of the Fixed tables. It will be
necessary to monitor the node while adjusting the transmitter drive level. The
optimization procedure will be explained later in this document.

Determine ISX Optical Input Power

1.) Connect an optical power meter to the ISX incoming fiber and record the
optical power in dBm. Optimum input is 0dBm. Reconnect the incoming
optical fiber to the receiver.

2.) Connect a DVM to the receiver test points COM & IPD record this voltage.

3.) Convert IPD voltage to dBm and compare the results to the measured
optical power reading. The conversion from IPD voltage to dBm is:

10 Log IPD Voltage = dBm.

(1 Volt = 0dBm)

Optimum IPD reading is 1.0VDC. The acceptable IPD voltage range is

0.5 to 1.5VDC. For more information consult DLP-1007.

Customer Service Applications Note

Determine ISX Optical Receiver RF Output

The receiver RF output is determined by two factors, the RF carrier levels

applied to transmitter and the optical power applied to the receiver.

Connect the input test probe TPA-2, (-20dB) and signal level meter to J8. Verify
the RF signal from the receiver. For an 112 channel load and 0dBm optical
power applied to the receiver a SLM will read approximately +25dBmV at test
point J8. With other than an 112 channel load the J8 test point RF level can be
calculated,

X = 25 + (10*log(112/y))
X = Calculated J8 signal level in dBmV
y = channel load

When the received optical power is other than 0dBm the signal level measured
at J8 will change by the following formula.

Signal level change = 25 + (2 * 10Log IPD)

The primary pad value should equal,

J8 signal level - 18dB = X

X= primary pad values

Measure RF Output Level

1.) Connect the -20dB Output Test Probe, TPA-1, to an active output port.

2.) Verify the proper gain and slope, factory set for +44dBmV at 750MHz and
a 10dB tilt/slope.

3.) Install pads and/or equalizers as appropriate to achieve the desired

output levels.

Changing Input Optical Power will change ISX output

7
ADC Broadband Communications, A Division of ADC Telecommunications, Inc.
ADC Broadband Communications reserves the right to change this information without notice.
Customer Service Applications Note

There is a 2 for 1 relationship between the received optical power and the RF
output levels. If the optical input is decreased by 1dB the RF output will
decrease by 2dB. Example, a 0dBm optical input is providing a +44dBmV RF
output, changing the optical input to -1dBm will cause the RF output to decrease
to +42dBmV. The CNR will decrease by 1dB. CTB will improve by 2dB and
CSO will improve by 1.5dB.

RF Output Level Variables

The RF level at the receiver test point J8 is a function of several parameters. At

the transmitter these are the Channel Load, RF input to the optical transmitter,
the transmitters internal attenuator (Fixed Mode), and the precise laser optical
output. At the receiver the optical input directly affects RF output level and
system performance.

Customer Service Applications Note

Optimizing HWX-ISX link performance

This section describes how to fine adjust the optical system’s performance.
Performance is often acceptable without adjustment but this procedure is
provided for those who wish to achieve the best possible link performance.
Optimization can be performed on an active system at any time if at least one
test channel is provided. The procedure is transparent to the subscriber.

System performance is determined by the transmitter, channel load, optical loss,

and node RF output levels. Performance can be controlled by the transmitter’s
internal RF attenuator in either the Custom table or the Fixed Table. The RF
signal levels applied to the laser can be changed without affecting service.

Optimization is accomplished by changing the laser drive level while monitoring

the RF output of the node with a spectrum analyzer. When the transmitter drive
level is increased by 1dB the node C/N will improve by 1dB, while CTB is
degraded by 2dB and CSO by 1.5dB.

Once the transmitter RF input signal level has been determined the internal
attenuator can be utilized to optimize the transmitter drive level in 0.25dB “small
steps” or 1dB “large steps” increments. The ISX RF output will change in
relationship to the ATTN. xxdB.

When a new RF drive level is applied to the transmitter the node’s RF output
may need to be re-balanced. Changing the primary pad by the same amount as
the transmitter drive level is adjusted will return the RF output to the previous
level but with optimized performance. Typically, the primary pad value should
equal the J8 measurement -18dB.

Link performance can be verified by following the NCTA Recommended Practice

For Measurements on Cable Television Systems.

ISX Status Monitor Upgrade

When upgrading an ISX node to accommodate a Status Monitoring Module,

three jumpers located on the Lid Motherboard must be opened for the module to
function properly. Cutting JP1 and JP2 connects the forward and reverse path
signals to the module. This allows communications via the forward and reverse
optical fiber paths. JP3 activates the firmware already present in all ISX nodes.
The JP3 jumper maybe either a wire jumper or a removable header.

The status monitor input level range is -20 to +10dBmV, nominal -5dBmV.

Refer to ADCs Homeworx ISX Kit Procedures Guide, Installing a Status Monitor
Module, ADC P/N 060457-001 for more complete installation instructions.

Lid Board Voltage Checks

The umbilical cord directs +24VDC from the ISX Power Supply to the DC to DC
converter on the Lid Board. The DC to DC converter supplies +5 and -5 VDC for
the optical receiver and transmitter modules. These voltages can be checked
with a DC voltmeter at any one of the five circuit board connectors for the optical
receivers and transmitters.

Relative Level Equalizer Chart

This chart can be used to estimate RF carrier levels due to equalizer tilt.
The 750MHz output level and the system tilt must be known. To use the chart
locate the system tilt on the right hand side. To determine the 550MHz carrier
level draw a line up from the bottom of the chart to intersect with the tilt line
corresponding to the equalizer value. Draw a horizontal line from the
intersection to the right side of the chart. The difference in dB between this line
and the tilt line is subtracted from the 750MHz level. For example if the highest
frequency analog video carrier on the system is 550MHz and the 750MHz level is
+44dBmV with equalizer tilt of 9dB. The estimated level at 550MHz is
+41.5dBmV.

Forward Path
The video optical receiver (50 - 550 MHz) is combined with signals from one of two
fibers providing POTS. A configuration module selects one receiver and combines it
with the output from the video receiver. A signal to the RF modem is tapped off through
an integrated directional coupler on the lid mother board. The combined signals are
directed to the forward input on the RF Amplifier Module in the Base Assembly. The
output of the primary stage push pull pre-amplifier is applied to a four way splitter.
Each Hybrid amplifier module has an independent plug in pad and equalizer with a
power doubling output hybrid amplifier.

Reverse Path
The sub-band RF signals pass though a diplex filter that splits the forward and reverse
signal paths. The low pass leg from the diplex filter is sent to a four way combiner.
A plug-in pad is provided to control the input level to the return optical transmitter.
The sub-band output of an RF Modem is combined through an integrated directional
coupler on the lid mother board.
