WRITTEN REPORT

Continuous and Repeating Patterns and Number Sentences

INTRODUCTION

Continuous and repeating patterns and number sentences are necessary for developing an
effective mathematical foundation and developing critical cognitive skills. These concepts
not only help to deepen one's comprehension of mathematics, but they also improve
problem-solving and critical thinking skills. These skills have broad applications outside of
the classroom, influencing many facets of daily life and professional sectors. Repetition and
patterns are fundamental components of all learning. In primary development, it is critical to
understand that children do not learn via the adult perspective of a sit-down activity with
peers, but rather through a cycle of observation, exploration, and eventually mastery.
Students should also learn to compose number sentences because they represent
mathematical structure and serve as the foundation for algebraic equations. Constructing a
number sentence from a real-world situation is a critical step in using mathematics in
everyday life.

This report provides a comprehensive overview of Continuous and Repeating Patterns and
Number Sentences.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this topic, the students will able to;

a.) Define the Continuous and Repeating Patterns and Number Sentences
b.) Appreciate the Importance of Solving Problem in Real Life Situation
c.) Demonstrate their knowledge about Continuous and Repeating Patterns and Number
Sentences

LEARNING CONTEXT

What is Pattern?

Pattern is a set of numbers or objects arrange in a sequence such that they are related to
each other in a specific rule. The Pattern can be related to any type of event or object. If the
set of numbers are related to each other in a specific rule, then the rule or manner is called
a pattern. Sometimes, patterns are also known as a sequence.

Continuous Pattern - is a pattern where something is added in the terms every time the
sequence repeats.
Example:
Number Pattern- are also continuous patterns. They may be increasing or decreasing.

Example:
1.) 3 5 7 9 11 13 ? ?
Order of the numbers: Increasing order
Difference between two consecutive terms: 2
5-3=2 7-5=2 9-7=2 11-9=2 13-11=2
Next term: 13+2=15 15+2=17
If the order of the number is increasing, you are going to add the difference of the two
consecutive terms on the last term to find the next missing term.

2.) 65 55 45 35 25 ? ?
Order of the numbers: Decreasing order
Difference between two consecutive terms: 10
65-55=10 55-45=10 45-35=10 35-25=10
Next term:25-10=15 15-10=5
If the order of the number is decreasing, you are going to subtract the difference of the two
consecutive terms on the last term to find the next missing term.

2 TYPES OF CONTINUOUS PATTERN

A. Growing Pattern

Patterns that increase (or grow) according to a certain rule, we can find a growing pattern
with pictures shapes, objects, numbers, etc.

EXAMPLES OF GROWING PATTERN

B. Reducing Pattern

It is a pattern in which numbers decrease in value or designs and objects get smaller and
more compact.

EXAMPLES OF REDUCING PATTERN

What is Repeating Pattern?

A repeating pattern is a pattern that repeat themselves over and over again according to a
certain rule.

EXAMPLES OF REPEATING PATTERN

What is Number Sentences?

A number sentence is a mathematical sentence made up of numbers and signs.

So, there are basic arithmetic operations. Arithmetic operations are a branch of
mathematics, that involves the study of numbers, operation of numbers that are useful in all
the other branches of mathematics.

It basically comprises operations such as Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division.

1. Addition

is a mathematical operation in which two or more numbers or quantities are added together
to form a sum.

There are two formats of Addition.

1. Horizontal Format
2. Vertical Format

Example of Activities in Addition

1. Ladybug Addition Activity
 students can roll two dice or pick two number cards to create a number sentence.
Then they place the black dots on the ladybug to show the answer to the addition
number sentence.

2. Make a coat hanger and clothespins addition machine

 students can roll two dice or pick two number cards to create a number sentence.
Then they place the black dots on the ladybug to show the answer to the addition
number sentence.

2. Subtraction

It means taking away one number from another number.

Example of Activity in Subtraction

1. Build and Remove
 whether played at home or in the classroom, math games provide engaging practice
opportunities that can improve your students' fluency and number sense and help
create an interactive and engaging learning environment.

3. Multiplication

is the process of calculating the product of two or more numbers.

Example of Activity in Multiplication

1. Clapping Facts

EGE 113 : TEACHING MATHEMATICS IN THE PRIMARY GRADES

 tell students you will clap out a multiplication fact. They should listen carefully to the
number of claps and write the fact they hear down on a paper.

4. Division

is the process of taking a whole item or a set of items and splitting, or dividing, them into
equal groups.

Example of Activity in Division

1. Tiling Division Model
 use tiling squares or real tiles to model teaching division. Give each student a set of
tiles.

REVIEW OF CONCEPTS

 Pattern is a repeated arrangement of numbers, shapes, colors and so on. The

Pattern can be related to any type of event or object.
 Number Pattern is also a continuous pattern, they may be increasing or decreasing.
 There are 2 Types of Continuous Pattern, these are the Growing Pattern and
Reducing Pattern.
 Number Sentence is a mathematical sentence made up of numbers and signs. It
basically comprises operations such as Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and
Division.
