2.5.7. POWER MANAGEMENT

The VAS 6154 has two shutdown stages.

Shutdown stage 1: Power-saving mode

If there is no communication with the diagnostics device or the vehicle for a period of 15 minutes (default
value) (end of diagnostics), the VAS 6154 goes to shutdown stage 1. If communication is reestablished, the
VAS 6154 switches back to normal mode.

Shutdown stage 2: Automatic shutdown

If there is no communication with the diagnostics device or the vehicle for a period of 30 minutes (default
value) (end of diagnostics), the device shuts down. The VAS 6154 can be reactivated by switching the ignition
(terminal 15) off/on. The VAS 6154 is hereby restarted. A restart is also performed when the VAS 6154 is
unplugged from the power supply and then plugged back in. The startup process of the VAS 6154 can then
take up to a minute.

If the VAS 6154 is operated with USB module, it does not switch to shutdown
stage 2.

Information can be called in the web interface or the time-controlled shutdown of the diagnostics interface can
be configured after logging in as an administrator (see 2.5.11). If not logged in as an administrator, the
POWER MANAGEMENT tab will not appear.

Illustration 60: Screenshot Web Interface - Docking Station

If a connection module is not plugged in and if the plugged in connection module is not activated, the web
page is shown instead of a warning.

A. WLAN interface test

or
LAN interface test

• This test is available when

i. a LAN or WLAN connection module is connected to the diagnostics
interface
ii. a corresponding communication mode is activated (see Chapter 2.5.9.2).

• When WLAN AccessPoint mode is configured and activated, it is possible to

establish a direct connection between the VAS 6154 and the diagnostics device. The
test is started by checking "User-controlled connection test" and then clicking on
"Run test". The diagnostics device can now be connected to the VAS 6154 for a
period of 100 seconds.

• The test result is displayed after the test is complete.

© All rights reserved, including industrial property rights. Volkswagen AG has ownership of all rights to reproduction and distribution.
VAS 6154 Diagnostics Interface 60

The user-run connection test is only visible when the WLAN access point
mode has been activated (see Chapter 2.5.9.2).

• When the "WLAN infrastructure" mode has been configured and activated it is
possible to establish a connection between the VAS 6154 and the present WLAN
infrastructure. The test is started by clicking on "Run test".
• The test result is displayed in the text field after the test is complete.

If the "User-controlled connection test" is not checked then only a hardware

test is carried out in WLAN mode and no connection test.

2.5.8.1 EVALUATION OF WLAN SELF-TEST

If the WLAN test fails, first check whether the MAC

address of the WLAN module was read correctly. If
the entry in "VAS6154 MAC" is empty or contains the
value "00:00:00:00:00:00" or "FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF"
or the warning "WLAN device is defect or not
connected" appears, then there is a problem with the
Illustration 61: Screenshot Web Interface Docking Station
WLAN module. - Self-Test Result

Replace the WLAN module with another WLAN module (see chapter 2.7.1) and run the test again.

If the entry in "VAS6154 MAC" is now plausible, then the WLAN module is defective. If the entry in "VAS 6154
MAC" is still not plausible, then the VAS 6154 is defective. Contact your service provider in both cases.

If the test on the WLAN interface fails in all other areas, then there is most probably a problem with the
VAS 6154, the diagnostics device or your WLAN infrastructure. Should this be the case, please contact the
person in your company responsible for solving these types of issues (e.g. network administrator).

2.5.8.2 EVALUATION OF SELF-TEST OF THE ONBOARD INTERFACES

If the test on the onboard interface fails then you should, if possible, replace the docking station with a new
one and repeat the test with the same VAS 6154.

If the test still fails, the VAS 6154 is defective. If the test is now successful, the docking station is defective.
Contact your service provider in both cases.

A successfully completed full test or partial step is indicated by the word

"Successful" in the text box; a failed full test or partial step is indicated by the
word "Fail."
If a partial step fails, the entire test result also fails.

2.6 USE OF SEVERAL VAS 6154S IN ONE NETWORK

Several VAS 6154s can be interconnected in one network infrastructure. This is only possible with the WLAN
or LAN module. The network settings for a WLAN connection are described in Chapter 2.5.6.2. The LAN
settings are explained in Chapter 2.5.6.4.

2.7 MODULE SWITCH

A module must not be switched during ongoing operation. If a module is unplugged while the VAS 6154 is
plugged into the vehicle diagnostics socket or in the docking station, an error will occur during the unplugging
or plugging in of a module.

This error is indicated by a flashing of the green LED. A corresponding error code is saved in the user log. If a
module switch is performed, the VAS 6154 must be restarted. For this, the VAS 6154 is removed from the
diagnostics socket of the vehicle or the docking station and is reinserted after approx. 5 seconds.

A module switch during use leads to termination of this particular use. The
VAS 6154 must be restarted in this case.
The VAS 6154 is configured for the respective module. If a configuration was
not yet performed with the newly used module, this must be done in the
docking station.

2.7.1. MECHANICAL SWITCH

The different interface modules can be switched easily and without tools.

2.7.1.1 PLUGGING A MODULE IN

A module can only be plugged into the diagnostics interface in one position. This position is specified by the
position of the socket and plug of the mini-USB interface.

The module is pushed onto the diagnostics interface until it locks in place with an audible click. The module
should always be plugged in without force. Otherwise, the locking catch or the diagnostics interface can be
damaged.

VAS 6154 Diagnostics Interface 86

5.2.2. ERROR OPENING THE W EB INTERFACE

An error when opening the web interface can have several causes.

 Restart of the VAS 6154

Cause:
Inconsistency within the VAS 6154.
Fix:
1. Remove the VAS 6154 from the diagnostics socket. When using the USB module, the USB
cable must be disconnected from the Diagnostics device.
2. Plug the VAS 6154 back into the diagnostics socket after ca. 5 seconds or establish USB
connection.
3. After the VAS 6154 restarts, try to access the web interface again.

VAS 6154 Diagnostics Interface 87

 Check security programs

Cause:
A security program is blocking access to the web interface.
Fix:
Deactivate security program.

5.2.3. NEEDED FIREWALL RULES FOR OPERATING THE VAS 6154

The following firewall rules have to be set up on the diagnostics device or the network infrastructure in order to
guarantee correct operation of the VAS 6154.

 TCP Port 4500 (inbound, outbound) {required for diagnosis}

 Multicast on address 239.255.1.1, Port 6154 (inbound, outbound) {required for device management}
 Multicast on address 239.255.1.2, Port 6154 (inbound, outbound) {required for device management}
 TCP Port 6154 (inbound, outbound) {required for device management}

IP address ranges configured for the VAS 6154 (e.g. 192.168.1.x,

192.168.13.x, 192.168.61.x) may not be routed through a proxy server.

5.2.4. LOCALIZATION OF THE VAS 6154 USING HOSTNAME

Normally, the device management localizes a VAS 6154 automatically within a network. However, in some
networks this mechanism does not function properly due to administrative restrictions.

In such cases the device management must be configured on the diagnostics device so that the VAS 6154
can be reached via the network hostname (see Chapter 2.5.3.3).

For this configuration, changes are made on the diagnostics device in the configuration file for the device
management "VAS6154-Static-Devices.ini".

The configuration file can be found in the following location after installation:

C:\ProgramData\I+ME Actia GmbH\VAS6154 Driver\VAS6154-Static-Devices.ini

Add a new section to the file. As the name for the section, use the hostname as entered in Identification
Chapter 2.5.3.3.

If the IP address of the device is known and defined, it may also be added. This markedly speeds up the
localization of the VAS 6154.
