CO4: Understand the concept of feedback and apply it to amplifiers and oscillators
Theory:
To generate a audio frequency (low frequency) one oscillator called RC phase shift oscillator circuit
is used. This is mostly used because of its important features. This circuit is free from the circuit
fluctuations and the ambient temperature.
An oscillator is an amplifier with positive feedback i.e., a part of the output feedback to the i/p
(in-phase). The closed-loop gain, should be Aβ>1 and the total phase shift should be equal to 360.
R-C phase shift oscillator is a sine wave oscillator in which feedback circuit is of R & C. At low
frequency, LC oscillators are disadvantageous because their tank circuit will consist of bulky
inductors & capacitors which is unpractical. But, RC oscillators can be obtained at low as well as
high frequency. In the circuit diagram, the CE amplifier provides 180° phase shift & remaining 180°
phase shift required to get sustained oscillation is given by three RC network. A RC network ideally
provides phase shift of 90° but practically we do not get 90° phase shift, hence three identical RC
networks are designed to provide an overall phase shift of 180°. The condition of |Aβ|=1 is achieved
by varying value of collector resistance RC. This kind of oscillation is used generally for fixed
frequency of oscillation; this is because 3 capacitors should be ganged to vary the frequency which is
difficult.
The frequency of oscillations is determined by 3 RC sections
