GLOWING AGES ACADEMY SECONDARY PHASE

LESSON NOTES

WEEK: 2
DATE: 23rd – 27th September 2024
SUBJECT: TECHNICAL DRAWING
CLASS NAME: Year 11
TOPIC: PERSPECTIVE DRAWING
W.A.L.T:
 Identify and locate main terms used in perspective drawing.
 Explain the significance of each term in creating perspective
drawings.
W.I.L.F:
 Students should correctly label the horizon, station point,
vanishing points, and planes in perspective drawings.

PERSPECTIVE DRAWING IN TECHNICAL DRAWING

Introduction to Perspective Drawing:
Perspective drawing is a technique used to create the illusion
of depth and space on a flat surface. It allows artists and
draftsmen to represent three-dimensional objects in a way that
looks realistic and proportional. Understanding perspective is
essential for anyone involved in technical drawing,
architecture, and design.
TYPES OF PERSPECTIVE
1.One-Point Perspective:
This is the simplest form of perspective drawing.
It uses a single vanishing point on the horizon line.
Ideal for drawing objects that face the viewer directly, like
roads or hallways.
2.Two-Point Perspective:
In this method, two vanishing points are used, typically placed
on the horizon line.
Commonly used for drawing buildings or structures at an
angle.
This creates a more dynamic view of objects.
3.Three-Point Perspective:
This involves three vanishing points – two on the horizon and
one above or below.
Typically applied to tall buildings or objects viewed from a
dramatic angle.
It conveys a strong sense of height or depth.
ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF PERSPECTIVE DRAWING

a.Horizon Line:
A horizontal line that represents the viewer’s eye level.
All vanishing points are located on this line.
b.Vanishing Points:
Points on the horizon line where parallel lines appear to
converge.
Essential for creating depth in your drawings.

c. Orthogonal Lines:
Lines that lead to the vanishing point(s).
These lines help define the edges of objects from the viewer’s
perspective.

TECHNIQUES FOR EFFECTIVE PERSPECTIVE DRAWING

i. Use of Grid Systems:
A grid can help maintain proportion and spatial relationships
when drawing.

ii. Measuring with Sight:

Use your pencil to measure angles and distances in real life
and replicate them on paper.

iii. Foreshortening:
This technique involves altering the proportions of an object to
create the illusion that parts of the object are closer or farther
away.

COMMON APPLICATIONS OF PERSPECTIVE DRAWING

I. Architecture:
Helps architects visualize buildings and spaces before they are
constructed.
II. Product Design:
Enables designers to produce accurate representations of
products from various angles.
III. Game and Animation Design:
Used in the creation of environments and scenes that require a
realistic look.
Conclusion
Mastering perspective drawing is crucial for any aspiring
technical drafter or designer. By understanding and applying
the principles of perspective, students can create realistic and
engaging representations of three-dimensional objects and
spaces. Continual practice and observation will enhance your
skills and confidence in this essential drawing technique.
