Inverse Laplace Transform: Partial Fraction Method

B(s)
F(s) = A(s) and B(s) are polynomials in s domain
A(s)
 If F(s) is broken into: F(s) = F1(s) + F2(s) + F3(s) + … + Fn(s)
Then: L−1 F s = L−1 F1 s + L−1 F2 s + L−1 F3 s + … + L−1 Fn s
∴ f(t) = f1(t) + f2(t) + f3(t) + … + fn(t)
k s+z1 s+z2 … (s+z m)
Rewrite F(s) in fractional form: F(s) = for m < n
s+p1 s+p2 … (s+p n)
B(s) a1 a2 an
So F(s) = = + +…+ ak is the residue of the pole at s = - pk
A(s) s+p1 s+p2 s+pn
B(s)
ak is found as follows: ak = (s + pk)
A(s) 𝐬 = −pk
= ak e−pkt t > 0
ak
∴ L−1
s+pk

Then: f(t) = a1 𝐞−p1t + a2 𝐞−p2t + … + an 𝐞−pnt = 𝐋−𝟏 𝐅 𝐬
