1- A 220 V, 1450 rpm, 100 A separately excited dc machine has an armature resistance of 0.25 Ω. The machine
field parameters are Rf =110 Ω, If rated=1 A. The motor is connected to a conveyor with constant load torque
TL=50 Nm.
a- Determine:
i. The motor constant K
ii. The rated developed torque.
iii. The rated output power.
iv. The maximum allowable speed (Nmax) without exceeding the rated power when connecting the
conveyor
b- If the armature is supplied using a single phase fully controller rectifier from 240V 50 Hz supply. The field
is supplied using three-phase controlled rectifier supplied from 380V 50 Hz supply.
i. It is required to operate the motor at 500 rpm, determine the armature and field voltages and the
firing angle of both converters.
ii. It is required to operate the motor at 2000 rpm, determine the armature and field voltages and the
firing angle of both converters.
c- If the armature and the field are supplied using single quadrant chopper supplied from 380VDC.
i. It is required to operate the motor at 500 rpm, determine the armature and field voltages and the
duty cycles of both converters
ii. It is required to operate the motor at 2000 rpm, determine the armature and field voltages and the
duty cycles of both converters
2- A 220 V, 40 A, 1800 rpm separately excited dc motor with armature and field resistances of 0.1 and 110 .
Rated field current is 0.5 A. Consider load torque is constant at 5 Nm. It is required to operate the motor at 1400
rpm.
a- If the armature voltage is supplied from three phase fully controlled rectifier from a 220 V 50 Hz supply.
The motor field voltage is supplied from a single phase fully controlled rectifier from a 110V 50 Hz supply.
Determine
i. The armature and field voltages.
ii. The firing angles for both converters.
iii. Repeat for 2000 rpm speed.
b- If the armature and the motor field voltage are supplied from single quadrant choppers supplied from
220VDC. Determine
i. The armature and field voltages.
ii. The duty cycles for both converters.
iii. Repeat for 2000 rpm speed.
3- A DC series machine with armature resistance of 0.15 and field resistance of 0.1 is supplied from a three-
phase controlled rectifier from a 380 V 50 Hz supply. The machine can operate from zero speed to rated speed
of 1500 rpm.
The machine drives a constant torque load. At rated condition, the armature current is 200 A and the firing
angle is 10 degrees. Determine:
a. The firing angle required to reduce speed to 680 rpm.
b. The firing angle required to reduce speed to 500 rpm.
c. Repeat when the motor is supplied through single quadrant chopper from 561 DC voltage source and
the rated condition armature current and duty cycle are 200 A and 0.9, respectively. (Find duty cycles)
4- A 250 V series motor has armature and field resistances of 0.06 , 0.025 and draws a line current of 25 A
when running at 850 rpm. The armature is fed from a single phase fully controlled rectifier from a 280 V 50 Hz.
a- For a required speed of 500 rpm, find the armature voltage if the load torque is constant and the firing angle
required.
b- Repeat the above for speed 800 rpm.
c- Repeat if the armature is fed through single quadrant chopper from 280 DC voltage source. (Find duty
cycles)
5- A 380 V, 3 phase supply is used to drive a separately excited dc motor through a 3 phase fully controlled
rectifier bridge connected to the armature circuit and a 3 phase half-wave-controlled rectifier connected to the
field circuit. The armature resistance is 0.0874 Ω and the field resistance is 250 Ω. This machine has rated
armature current of 165 A when running at rated speed of 1800 rpm with rated armature and field voltages of
500 V. The field current is set to be the maximum possible value. The armature current corresponding to the
load demand is 100 A. as the delay angle of armature circuit is adjusted to 60⁰. The core and rotational losses
are neglected. The inductances of armature and field circuit are sufficient to make the armature and filed current
are continuous and ripple free.
a- Find developed torque and motor speed.
b- If the regenerative braking is applied to this motor by reversing the back emf through reversing the
polarity of the field voltage, find the delay angles of the armature and field converters to maintain the
armature current constant at the same value 100 A, hence find the power fed back to the supply.
