Practical No. 9 (Research Ethics and Plagiarism)

[1] What is research ethics?

 Research ethics refers to the principles and standards that guide researchers in conducting their
work responsibly and ethically. It encompasses the moral considerations involved in the design,
conduct, analysis, and reporting of research. Research ethics aims to ensure the integrity of the
research process, protect the rights and welfare of participants, and maintain the credibility of the
scientific community.

Key Components of Research Ethics:

1. Informed Consent: Researchers must obtain voluntary participation from subjects,

ensuring they understand the nature of the research, any potential risks, and their right to
withdraw at any time.
2. Confidentiality: Safeguarding the privacy of participants and their data is crucial.
Researchers must protect sensitive information and use it only for the stated purpose.
3. Integrity and Honesty: Researchers are expected to conduct their work truthfully,
avoiding fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism, and accurately reporting findings.
4. Minimizing Harm: Research should be designed to minimize physical, psychological, and
emotional harm to participants. This includes conducting risk assessments and ensuring
participant safety.
5. Respect for Diversity: Researchers should be sensitive to the cultural, social, and
individual differences among participants, ensuring inclusivity and fairness in the research
process.
6. Accountability: Researchers are accountable for their actions and must be prepared to
justify their research methods, decisions, and ethical considerations to review boards and the
broader community.

[2] What is plagiarism?

 Plagiarism is the act of using someone else's work, ideas, or words without giving proper
credit, thereby presenting them as your own. It can take various forms, such as copying text
verbatim, paraphrasing without citation, or using ideas or research without acknowledgment.
Plagiarism is considered unethical and a violation of academic and professional integrity. It
can be intentional or accidental, but both forms have consequences. To avoid plagiarism, it's
important to properly cite sources, use quotation marks for direct quotes, and ensure that any
borrowed material is correctly attributed.

[3] How we can avoid the plagiarism?
 Avoiding plagiarism is crucial in maintaining academic integrity and producing original
work.

1. Understand What Constitutes Plagiarism

 Direct Plagiarism: Copying text verbatim without credit.

 Self-Plagiarism: Reusing your own previous work without permission or citation.
 Mosaic Plagiarism: Using someone else's phrases or ideas without proper credit,
even if rearranged.
 Accidental Plagiarism: Failing to cite sources properly, either by mistake or
ignorance.

2. Properly Cite All Sources

 Use a consistent citation style (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.).

 Include citations for direct quotes, paraphrases, and summaries of someone else’s
work.
 Attribute ideas, data, and research findings to their original authors.

3. Keep Track of Your Sources

 While conducting research, take detailed notes and keep a clear record of where ideas,
quotes, and information come from.
 Use citation management tools like EndNote, Zotero, or Mendeley to organize and
store references.

4. Use Plagiarism Detection Tools

 Tools like Turnitin, Grammarly, or Quetext can help check your work for
unintentional plagiarism.
 These tools compare your text with millions of sources and highlight areas that may
need citations or revisions.

5. Revise and Review Your Work

 After completing your writing, review it to ensure all borrowed ideas or words are
properly cited.
 Cross-check your citations and ensure consistency with the chosen citation style.

[4] What are ethical considerations in mathematical research?

 Ethical considerations in mathematical research involve principles that guide responsible

and honest conduct while ensuring the integrity of the research process.

1. Accuracy and Honesty: Mathematical results and proofs must be presented truthfully,
without manipulation of data or conclusions to fit a desired outcome. Researchers must avoid
fabricating or falsifying data.

2. Proper Attribution and Avoiding Plagiarism: Giving proper credit to previous

work is essential. This includes citing original research, theories, and mathematical tools that
have influenced the work. Plagiarism, even if accidental, violates ethical standards.

3. Transparency and Reproducibility: Mathematical research should be transparent,

with sufficient detail provided so that others can verify or reproduce the results. Hiding key
steps or using undisclosed assumptions can mislead the mathematical community.

4. Collaboration Ethics: Collaboration should involve proper acknowledgment of

contributions from all members. Researchers must avoid exploiting the work of students,
junior colleagues, or collaborators without proper credit.

5. Responsibility in Application: Mathematicians should be mindful of the potential

societal or technological impacts of their research, especially if it could be applied in harmful
ways, such as in weapons development or surveillance.

6. Peer Review Integrity: When participating in the peer review process, researchers
must be objective, maintain confidentiality, and avoid conflicts of interest. They should not
use unpublished information for personal gain.

7. Respect for Intellectual Property: Respecting the intellectual property rights of

others, including copyright and patents, is essential. This applies to published works,
software, and proprietary algorithms.
