Since it may result in lower operational costs, better delivery performance, and higher customer
satisfaction levels, logistics and supply chain management (SCM) as a research area has been
gaining more and more attention from academicians and practitioners over the past 20 years. This
has made an organisation more competitive in terms of cost, quality, delivery, and flexibility. As
more and more multinational corporations (MNCs) source, manufacture, and distribute on a
worldwide scale, making their supply chains exceedingly difficult to manage, the relevance of
logistics and SCM is also growing as a result of globalisation. However, by outsourcing logistics
logistics (3PL) providers, businesses may be able to obtain very efficient and specialised logistical
Large multinational LSPs now provide entire supply chain solutions across a wide range of nations
with various socioeconomic and political contexts. In addition to providing value-added services
assembly and installation, packaging and labelling, distribution, after-sale support, reverse
logistics, and so forth, LSPs also perform core logistical tasks like transportation and warehousing.
Companies can take advantage of LSPs' knowledge while focusing on their core competencies by
outsourcing logistics.

While SCM focuses more on the chain's connections, agreements, supplier selection, information
and money flows in addition to material flows, building new facilities like plants, warehouses, and
distribution centres, and addressing bigger issues like society, the economy, government, and the
environment, the scope of logistics is largely limited to the routine task of moving and storing
goods. But if one thinks about it carefully, one may recognise that logistics is the foundation of
SCM, and that if logistics breaks down, the entire chain collapses. Despite the fact that logistics
involves commonplace things like warehouses, layouts, material handling equipment, the Motor
Vehicles Act, toll taxes, sales taxes, octroi, documentation, etc., effective management of it has the
potential to make the chain taut and nimble. Therefore, there is growing interest in logistics, and
The logistics company should move forward with the novel concepts if it wants to survive in the
fierce competition. The initiative focuses on Blue Dart's ground operations. The project's work
sheds light on how multimodal transportation will be incorporated into the existing surface
network.

INDUSTRY PROFILE
The Information Technology industry is, perhaps, typical of the changing and escalating
logistic demands of various industries today, irrespective of their category as 'old' or 'new' economy.
In the IT industry, the difference between success and failure is closely linked to the supply/value
1. The delivery of goods to the customer in the most reliable transit period (and preferably the
shortest) possible. 'Reliable' alludes to a certain guaranteed transit time for packages to reach
customers or the response that organisations need in the event of any exceptions.
2. The reverse flow of acknowledged signed delivery records without which, in many cases,
recovery of bills are virtually impossible. Especially so in the case of companies placing multi-
location orders that could cover hundreds of cities. The task for the supplier is staggering - plan
logistics for deliveries to all these locations, and hope for 100% of the delivery records to be returned
before bills can be submitted to the customer. In most IT companies, the role of 'logistics' or
'fulfillment' is key.
With organizations moving towards close to perfect standards like Six Sigma, interaction with
logistics suppliers has taken on a critical role moving up sometimes to the level of the CEO of the
organization.
15
Blue Dart Express Limited applied and found solutions to these critical demands much before other
players could even recognize their need. Through its exceptional people processes, superior
technology, and stress on quality systems over the last, almost two decades now, Blue Dart was

Retrieval of signed delivery records posed the industry's most intriguing problem. Blue Dart was
quick to understand this requirement and put in place a 100% retrieval system.
16
Blue Dart not only handles large volumes and oversize packages overnight - it also provides the
industry with status of their shipments and retrieves such records as are necessary for billing. The
entire cycle has been considerably shortened, enabling the industry to achieve healthy bottom-line.

Opportunities
The expansion of the Indian express business is being driven by strong macroeconomic growth and
solid trade growth. The sector had a value of Rs71 billion in 2005-2006 and over the previous three
to four years, it had expanded by between 25% and 30%. Over the following few years, it is
anticipated that the industry will increase at a comparable rate. Companies will find it more cost-
effective to have centralised, huge warehouses than to source and distribute locally when interstate
sourcing is exempt from VAT. The dedicated rail freight corridor, modernised ports, and improved
road infrastructure are all expected to strengthen the nation's logistics infrastructure and increase
intrastate and interstate freight traffic. Indian Railways' initiative to permit commercial operators
