Course Name: CAD Lab-II

Course Code: CEC-4910

List of Problems

1. Design a Sarda fall for the following data:

√𝐹.𝑁𝑜.
i. Full supply discharge Q = + 5 cumec
2.8
ii. U/S full supply level (FSL) = 103.5 m
iii. D/S full supply level (FSL) = 102.0 m
iv. Full supply depth U/S & D/S = 1.5 m U/S and D/S
v. Bed width U/S and D/S = 10 m
vi. Side slope of canal = 1:1
vii. Bligh’s creep coefficient C =8

2. Design a Sarda fall which is to be constructed on a canal carrying a full supply discharge
√𝐹.𝑁𝑜.
‘Q’ of = + 12 cumec. The other relevant data obtained from the site of the fall
2.8
are as given under;

i. U/S full supply level (FSL) = 101.5 m

ii. D/S full supply level (FSL) = 100.0 m
iii. U/S and D/S depth of flow = 1.5 m
iv. U/S and D/S bed width = 20 m
v. Side slope = 1.5(H): 1(V)
vi. Khosla’s safe exit gradient GE = 1/6

1
3. Design a suitable cross drainage work with the help of the following data;

Drain data

i. High flood discharge ‘Q’ = 600 cumec

ii. High flood level (HFL) = 207.5 m
iii. High flood depth = 2.5 m
Canal data

√𝐹.𝑁𝑜.
i. Full supply discharge ‘Q’ = + 20 cumec
2
ii. Bed width = 18 m
iii. Full supply depth = 1.5 m
iv. Full supply level (FSL) = 210 m

4. Design a suitable cross drainage work with the help of the following data;

Drain data

i. High flood discharge ‘Q’ = 800 cumec

ii. High flood level (HFL) = 150 m
iii. Bed level = 147.5 m
Canal data

√𝐹.𝑁𝑜.
i. Full supply discharge ‘Q’ = + 20 cumec
2
ii. Bed width = 20 m
iii. Full supply depth = 1.5 m
iv. Side slope = 1:1
v. Full supply level (FSL) = 150.5 m

2
5. Design the first 3 km of a distributory canal which takes off from a branch canal. The bed
of which is at RL 224.0 m and the water depth is 1.70 m. The outlet discharge factor is
1650 hectare/cumec. The gross commanded areas (GCA) are given as:

Below (km) Head (0.00 km) 1.0 2.0 3.0

GCA (Ha) 40,000 35,000 30,000 25,000

Out of this command, 70% is the culturable commanded area (CCA). The canal has to be
designed for rabi irrigation at 30% of the CCA (i.e. Intensity of Irrigation). Assume
channel losses at 2 cumec/million sq. m of wetted perimeter and the total losses below 3
km are 0.4 cumec.
i. Plot the longitudinal section of the distributory canal showing the proposed bed line
and the water surface line.
ii. Draw cross-section at every km, the ground level at every 200m along the centre line
of the distributory canal are given as below;
Km R.L. (m)
0.00 225.0
0.20 225.15
0.40 225.10
0.60 225.05
0.80 224.95
1.00 224.25
1.20 224.10
1.40 224.05
1.60 224.00
1.80 223.95
2.00 223.35
2.20 223.20
2.40 223.20
2.60 223.05
2.80 222.95
3.00 222.80

Design various sections of the channel using Lacey’s method. Taking Lacey’s silt factor as
unity. The other data may be assumed suitably if not given.
