Lesson Plan

Learning Objectives:
Students learn how to make a phone call and to answer the phone.
Students learn how to leave a message with a person.
Students learn how to leave a message with an answering machine.

Vocabulary:
 Hello, this is ____ (your name). May I speak with _____?
 I’m sorry, he’s not home right now.
 Would you like to leave a message?
 Ask him to call ____ (your name). My number is _ _ _ - _ _ _ - _ _ _ _
 Hi this is ____(name)_____. I am calling for _(name)__. Please call me back at
___(#)___. Thank you.

Required Materials:
 Whiteboard and markers

Lesson Plan:
Review material from previous lesson

Telephone conversation
1. Teacher dialogue:
a. T1: (ring ring ring) Hello
b. T2: Hello, this is _______, may I speak with ______?
c. T1: Yes, hold on
2. T writes dialogue on the board. T says a line and students repeat the line.
3. T puts students into pairs to practice the dialogue.

Leaving your name and number


1. Teacher dialogue:
a. T1: Hello, this is ______, may I speak with _____?
b. T2: I’m sorry, he’s not home right now. Would you like to leave a message?
c. T1: Yes, ask him to call Pedro. My number is 919-377-6194
d. T2: Ok, I’ll give him the message
e. T1: Thanks, good bye
f. T2: Bye
2. T asks students to practice the dialogue, first with the teacher and then with the
person next to them (it is written on the board)

Leaving a message
1. T explains: If you make a phone call and no one answers, leave a message:
2. Hi this is ____(name)_____. I am calling for _(name)__. Please call me back at
___(#)___. Thank you.
3. Students repeat the dialogue.
4. Ask students to practice the dialogue in pairs.
