Non-cloud IoT-based water quality monitoring system

A non-cloud IoT-based water quality monitoring system for a 40,000-liter water tank,
where the IoT system will only send quality parameter values (like pH and chlorine content)
via SMS directly to the public without cloud integration. The estimate will cover the
hardware components, software, and operational expenses. Goal is to directly send water
quality parameter values via SMS to the public twice a day, without cloud or advanced
storage, that focuses purely on the basic IoT system with SMS capability.

IoT Hardware Components

The system will involve basic sensors and a microcontroller that connects to a GSM module
for SMS. The cost breakdown is as follows:

Component Quantity Unit Cost (Rs) Total Cost (Rs)

pH Sensor 1 4250 4250

Chlorine Sensor 1 8500 8500

Turbidity Sensor 1 3400 3400

Microcontroller (e.g., Arduino/ESP32) 1 2550 2550

GSM Module (for SMS sending) 1 2550 2550

SIM Card with SMS Capability 1 850 850

Component Quantity Unit Cost (Rs) Total Cost (Rs)

Power Supply (Battery or Solar Panel) 1 4250 4250

Enclosure and Mounting Hardware 1 4250 4250

Wiring and Connectors 1 set 1700 1700

Total Hardware Cost: Rs 32,300

Summary of Costs approx

Category Cost (Rs)

1. Hardware Costs 35,000

2. Software Development Costs 25,000

3. Installation and Setup Costs 15,000

4. SMS Communication Costs (per month) 5,000

5. Maintenance and Operational Costs (per year) 10k/year

One-Time Costs: Rs 90,000 approx

Implementation Strategy

• Phase 1: Infrastructure Setup

o Install a 40,000-liter capacity tank and lay down water pipelines for
distribution.
o Set up IoT sensors and connect them to the gateway device.
• Phase 2: IoT System Setup
o Integrate pH, chlorine, and turbidity sensors.
• Phase 3: Testing and Calibration
o Test sensors to ensure accurate water quality measurements.
o Calibrate SMS alert systems for public outreach.
• Phase 4: Public Awareness Campaign
o Educate the public on how to interpret SMS alerts.
o Promote participation in water quality monitoring by the community.

**Little more sensors can be used and extended, can also make use of solar panels for power
supply and high end project without cloud --- Estimate approx.

One-Time Costs: Rs 1.20,000

Monthly Operational Costs (SMS): Rs 5,000/month
Annual Maintenance Costs: Rs 25,000/year
