Sara’s summer holidays in England are

usually spent relaxing at home with her
parents, but if they have to work, then she
spends some days at her grandparents’
house. For years she’s longed to go abroad
to see something other than her local park,

true this summer! Her dad surprised
her with a two week holiday in
Türkiye, as a congratulations
present for doing so well in her
summer exams.

Sara had been on a plane before in

the past, but the flight to Istanbul
was over three hours so she was
nervous about getting bored. Despite
her initial concerns, she made some real
progress with her book and even started
to learn a little bit of the local language so
she wouldn’t have to speak in English while
she was there. She learnt that ‘selam’ means
‘hi’ and ‘hoşça kal’ means ‘bye’, among other
words, and she also read the guidebook that On the first day, the family was exhausted

Disclaimers: This resource has been made for the purpose of teaching English language learners. We know that students can be learning English in many different places, in many different ways and at age,
so we try to keep these resources as general as possible.
There are many acronyms associated with English language teaching. These include (but are not limited to) ELT, TEFL, EFL, ELL, EAL and ESOL. While the term ESL may not fully represent the linguistic
backgrounds of all students, it is the most widely recognised term for English language teaching globally. Therefore, we use the term ‘ESL’ in the names of our resources to make them easy to find but they are
suitable for any student learning to speak English.
