Common types of raster file


A raster image, also known as a bitmap, is a type of digital graphic that is composed
of a grid of individual pixels, each pixel representing a single point of colour. The im-
age's resolution, measured in pixels per inch (PPI), determines its clarity and detail;
higher resolutions mean more pixels per inch, resulting in greater detail and smooth-
er transitions between colours. However, because raster images are resolution-de-
pendent, scaling them up beyond their original size can lead to pixelation, where indi-
vidual pixels become visible, and the image appears blurry or blocky.
