Unclean surroundings can lead to the spread of harmful diseases. These diseases are often
caused by poor sanitation, dirty water, and improper disposal of waste. In this project, we will
discuss two diseases caused by unclean surroundings, precautions to avoid them, and home
remedies. We will also talk about waste management and the importance of cleanliness through
the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Cholera
Cholera is a bacterial disease caused by drinking contaminated water or eating food that is
infected with cholera bacteria. This disease often occurs in areas with poor sanitation and waste
disposal. It leads to severe diarrhea and dehydration.

Typhoid
Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by the Salmonella bacteria, which spread through
contaminated water or food. Typhoid fever commonly happens in areas where there is poor
hygiene and sanitation, and it causes symptoms like high fever, weakness, and stomach pain.

Precautions and Home Remedies (Page 5)

Precautions:
For Cholera:
Drink only clean, boiled, or purified water.
Wash hands with soap after using the bathroom and before eating.
Avoid eating food from unhygienic places or street vendors.
For Typhoid:
Drink clean water and avoid drinking from open sources.
Ensure that food is thoroughly cooked and clean.
Always wash hands properly, especially before eating and after using the toilet.

Home Remedies: Page 6

For Cholera:
Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS): Drinking ORS helps in replenishing lost fluids and
electrolytes.
Ginger Tea: Ginger has antibacterial properties and helps with digestion.
For Typhoid:
Tulsi (Basil) Leaves: Boiling tulsi leaves in water and drinking the solution can help fight the
infection.
Coconut Water: Coconut water helps in keeping the body hydrated and balanced, especially
during fever.

Waste Management (Page 7)

Waste management is the process of collecting, transporting, and disposing of waste in a safe
and clean way. Proper waste management is crucial in preventing diseases like cholera and
typhoid, as it prevents water contamination and the spread of bacteria.

Steps in Waste Management:

Segregation: Waste should be sorted into biodegradable (wet) and non-biodegradable (dry)
waste.
Recycling: Non-biodegradable items like plastic, metal, and glass should be recycled to avoid
pollution.
Composting: Organic waste like food scraps can be composted to make natural fertilizers for
plants.
Proper Disposal: Waste should be thrown in the right bins and not left on the streets or in open
areas.

Benefits of Waste Management:

Reduces the chances of water contamination.
Helps keep the environment clean and reduces pollution.
Prevents the spread of diseases caused by improper waste disposal.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Page 8 and 9)

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) was launched by Prime Minister Narendra
Modi on October 2, 2014, to promote cleanliness, hygiene, and sanitation across India. The goal
of this mission is to eliminate open defecation, improve waste management, and encourage
people to maintain cleanliness in public and private spaces.

Key Goals of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan:

Clean Public Spaces: To keep streets, roads, and public places clean and free from garbage.
Toilets for All: To ensure that every home has access to a toilet, and open defecation is stopped.
Waste Management: Proper segregation of waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable
categories, and promoting recycling.
Awareness and Education: To spread awareness about the importance of cleanliness and
sanitation to all citizens.

Key Activities:

Cleanliness Drives: Regular cleanliness drives in schools, offices, and villages.

Construction of Toilets: Ensuring that every home and public place has a toilet to prevent open
defecation.
Public Participation: Encouraging people to actively participate in keeping their surroundings
clean and to manage waste properly.

Page 10: Conclusion

In conclusion, diseases like cholera and typhoid are often caused by unclean surroundings and
poor hygiene. By following simple precautions such as drinking clean water, washing hands
regularly, and keeping our surroundings clean, we can avoid these diseases. Proper waste
management is key to maintaining a healthy environment, and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has
played a major role in improving cleanliness across the country. It is important for everyone to
do their part in keeping their environment clean to prevent the spread of diseases and improve
overall public health.
