Objective:
Experimentally measure the Poisson’s ratio of a beam with a rectangular cross-section
subjected to uniaxial loading. Mount a strain gauge on the beam and acquire strain data for
performing the experiment.

Theory:
In this lab experiment, we pasted a strain gauge onto a straight AL6063-T6 rod. We then aimed
to understand how materials respond to stress and strain using a Universal Testing Machine
(UTM). The formula for strain:
∆𝐿
𝜀=
𝐿
this formula can be combined with the gauge factor (GF) to relate the change in resistance of
the strain gauge to the strain:
∆𝑅/𝑅
𝜀=
𝐺𝐹
Original resistance of the gauge = 120 Ω and Gauge factor = 2.

The formula for Poisson’s Ratio is:

𝜈=− , for small strains.

Equipments:
1. Strain gauges are devices used to measure the deformation or strain in an object subjected to
stress.

2. Tinius Olsen Universal Testing Machine for the testing of the rod and taking strain data.

Figure 2: UTM.

3. Rectangular beam, Soldering iron and soldering wire, sandpaper, acetone, Tape, marker and
super glue.

Procedure:
Following is the procedure for mounting strain gauges:
1. Identify the area where the strain gauge is to be mounted.
2. Clean the specified region by using emery paper and acetone.
3. Carefully mark the location where the strain gauge is to be mounted.
4. Follow the instruction in lab to paste strain gauge by using cello tape and strain gauge
adhesive.
5. After about 5 minutes carefully remove the cello tape and wrap the area to avoid any
damage to the strain gauge.

Following is the procedure for soldering wires to the strain gauges:

1. Clean the end tabs of the strain gauges with acetone.
2. Make soldering points have on the tabs of the strain gauge.
3. Follow the instruction given in the lab for soldering the wire.
Observations and Results:
The following data was obtained from the UTM machine:

Figure 3: Transverse strain vs Axial strain.

The slope of the obtained best fit curve is -0.338.

Therefore, the Poisson Ratio = 0.338.

Sources of Error:
The Poisson Ratio of AL6063-T6 is 0.33. Hence, the % error in the experiment is ∼ 0.024%.
Following can be the sources of error:
1. The strain gauges are not pasted properly to measure the actual strain.
2. The beam is not mounted properly on the UTM machine.
3. There is some error in the cleaning process.
