1. Experiment 4: DC Motor System: Identification and Speed
Control
1.1 Objective:
The following objectives were met for the DC motor System model no. JGB37-3530GB-
24V-178 RPM.
(a) To determine the time constant of the given DC motor model
(b) To determine the gain of the system.
(c) To compute the open loop transfer function.
(d) To design a controller for Speed control of the given DC motor system using
Arduino Mega 2560
1.2 Specification:
(a) DC motor System model no. JGB37-3530GB-24V-178 RPM
(b) L298N MXN 20278 Motor Driver
(c) Arduino Mega 2560
(d) Power output Generator IT 6302
1.3 Experimental setup:

1.4 System Modelling:

To determine the Transfer function of the DC motor, Gain and Time constant were
computed as below:
1.4.1 Gain Computation:
The Ratio of Steady state speed and Input Voltage gives Gain of the DC motor.
ωo
K= =8. 15
Ei

1.4.2 Time Constant Computation:

In order to evaluate the Time Constant, a Step input is given and Speed is measured using
Encoder feedback through Serial monitor in Arduino IDE.

Time Constant = 63.2% Peak Speed = 150 ms

Fig 2: Time Constant Computation from Serial Monitor

1.4.3 Open Loop Transfer function of DC motor:

The Open Loop Transfer Function is represented as below

K
G ( s )=
τs+1
K=8.15 , τ =150 ms

Fig 3: Open Loop Transfer Function of DC Motor

1.5 Controller Design for Actual Implementation using Arduino:

SISOTOOL in MATLAB was utilized for the design of PI controller for speed control of
DC motor. Desired performance parameters like rise time, settling time and max peak
overshoot were chosen as attached in below figures:
Fig 4: Desired Characteristics of Controller for DC Motor

Fig 5: Pole Placement using SISO Tool

Fig 6: Controller Design

1.5.7 Inferences:
a) The time constant of the given DC motor model is determined as 150ms.
b) The gain of the system is found as 8.15.
8. 15
c) The open loop transfer function is computed as G ( s )=
0.15 s +1
d) The controller for Speed control of the given DC motor system using Arduino Mega
1+0.1 1 s
2560 is designed as C ( s )=0.67156 ×
s

1.6 Conclusion:
The experiment successfully met its objectives by analysing the characteristics like gain
and time constant of DC Motor using Arduino. The controller was hence designed to meet
the desired characteristics for speed control.
