I. Solve the following problems. For each problem, illustrate and label figure.
1. A concrete floor with a conductivity of 0.8 Btu/hr-ft-°F measures 30 ft by 40 ft with a thickness of 4
inches. The floor has a surface temperature of 70°F and the temperature beneath it is 60°F. What is the heat flux and the heat transfer rate through the floor? 2. 1000 Btu/hr is conducted through a section of insulating material shown in Figure 1 that measures 1 ft2 in cross-sectional area. The thickness is 1 in and the thermal conductivity is 0.12 Btu/hr-ft-°F. Compute the temperature difference across the material. 3. One insulated wall of a cold-storage compartment is 8 m long by 2.5 m high and consist of an outer steel plate 18 mm thick. An inner wood wall 22.5 mm thick, the steel and wood 90 mm apart to form a cavity which is filled with cork. If the temperature drop across the extreme faces of composite wall is 15oC, calculate the heat transfer per hour through the wall and the temperature drop across the thickness of the cork. Take the coefficients of thermal conductivity for steel, cork, and wood as 45, 0.045, and 0.18 W/m-K, respectively. 4. A furnace wall consists of 10 in. of Missouri firebrick (k=1.0 Btu/hr-ft-˚F), 6 in. of the common brick (k=0.40), 3-in of 85% magnesia (k=0.04 Btu/hr-ft-˚F), and 1/8-in thick of steel plate (k=34 Btu/hr-ft-˚F). If the inside surface temperature is at 2400˚ and the outside surface is at 100˚F, calculate the heat loss per unit area of the composite wall. What are the interface temperatures? 5. Calculate the thermal conductivity of a 4-by 4-ft test panel, 0.80 in. thick, if during a 3-hour test period there are conducted 900 Btu through the panel with a temperature differential of 15˚F between surfaces. 6. A hollow sphere with an outer diameter of 10 inches and an inner diameter of 6 inches and having a thermal conductivity of 26.667 BTU/hr-ft-˚F is lagged by a 2 inches of unknown insulation material. Surface temperature at the outside is measured at 230˚F. Determine the heat loss and the thermal conductivity of the insulation material considering a temperature differential within the sphere of 420˚F. Inside temperature is maintained at 800˚F. 7. A thin-walled tube of stainless steel with thermal conductivity of 22 W/m-K and having an outside diameter of 5 cm and 1.25 cm thick is covered with a 3.0 cm layer of insulating material Z. The outside surface temperature is 35˚C. (a) Calculate the heat loss per meter length considering a temperature drop within the stainless steel of 390˚C. (b) What is the thermal conductivity of the insulation material if the temperature inside the pipe is maintained at 265˚C?
