Position on Simulation of Damage and Failure of Reinforced

Concrete Members under Complex Dynamic Loading Conditions

Supervisor: Dr. Petros Sideris | [email protected]

Project Description: This project intends to

advance structural simulation capabilities for RC
structures. The successful candidate will establish
a computational RC flexibility-based element
formulation that will combine nonlocal damage
mechanics with multi-scale/-order techniques to
simulate (and predict) flexural, shear and torsional
failures of RC members subjected to triaxial
dynamic loading conditions. This new element will
be integrated in OpenSees and other software
and will be used to predict responses from a wide
range of large-scale experiments and to quantify
the performance of vulnerable RC structures. The project is funded by the National
Science Foundation.
We are looking for applicants to start in Summer 2022 or Fall 2022.

Requirements:
• Knowledge of structural analysis, matrix structural analysis, and the finite
element method
• Experience in computer programming, such as in MATLAB, or Python, or
C/C++, or FORTRAN, or other
• Background on reinforced concrete structures
• GPA of 3.5/4 or higher (or 8/10 or 17/20 for institutions using a 10- or 20-
point scale).
• B.S. degree is required. M.S. degree is preferred, but not required
• Coursework or experience in nonlinear FEM, or nonlinear structural analysis,
or plasticity is a big plus, but not a requirement
