Assignment-5

1. Classify and reduce the following partial differential equations to a canonical form and
solve them(if possible).
(i) x2 uxx + 2xyuxy + y 2 uyy + xyux + y 2 uy = 0
(ii) yuxx + 3yuxy + 3ux = 0; y ̸= 0
(iii) uxx + uxy − 2uyy − 3ux − 6uy = 9(2x − y)
(iv) uxx − 4uxy + 4uyy = cos (2x + y)
(v) (1 + x2 )uxx + (1 + y 2 )uyy + xux + yuy = 0
(vi) uxx + 2uxy + 4uyy + 2ux + 3uy = 0
2. Find the Fourier series for f (x) = | sin x| on the interval −π < x < π.
3. Find the Fourier series for f (x) = x sin x, −π ≤ x ≤ π.
4. Expand the function sin ax, −π < x < π as a Fourier series.

5. Find the Fourier series for the function 1 − cos x in the interval −π < x < π.
6. Find the Fourier expansion for the function f (x) = x − x3 in the interval −1 < x < 1.
7. In each of the following Cauchy problems, obtain the solution of the wave equation
utt − uxx = 0, x ∈ R, t > 0

with initial conditions u(x, 0) = f (x), ut (x, o) = g(x)

(i) Find the explicit solution u(x, t), hence obtain the value of u at (0, 12 ), (1, 12 ), (−1, 12 ),
(0, 2) when 
x + 1
 , −1 ≤ x < 0
f (x) = −x + 1 , 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 , g(x) = 0.

0 otherwise
(ii) f (x) = 0, g(x) = xe−x .
2
(iii) f (x) = sin x, g(x) = 4xe−x .
8. Solve the wave equation
utt = 4uxx , 0 < x < π, t > 0
u(0, t) = 0, u(π, t) = 0
with initial condition, u(x, 0) = f (x), ut (x, 0) = g(x).
(i) f (x) = x(π − x), g(x) = 0
(ii) f (x) = 0, g(x) = 3 sin x − 4 sin3 x
(iii) f (x) = sin 2x cos 2x, g(x) = sin3 x
