A lesson Of Integrity

Integrity is a word we hear a lot, especially in school, but sometimes it’s hard to fully
understand what it means until we experience it firsthand. It’s not just about doing the right thing
when people are watching; it’s about doing the right thing even when no one is there to see it.
As students, we’re encouraged to be honest, respectful, and responsible in our everyday
actions. One of my personal experiences helped me understand the true meaning of integrity
and how it can show up in unexpected ways. While these acts of kindness may seem small,
they can make the person's day and give them hope that good is still in the world.

One evening, I was at home cooking dinner for myself. It was a cold and rainy evening,
and I was making something simple but warm. A meal that I knew would be nice to enjoy after a
long day. I had just put my food on a plate when I looked out the door and noticed someone
walking on the sidewalk. They had only a zip-up jacket, and only sandals on without socks, but
were still shivering from the cold and wet weather. To see this person, clearly homeless and
struggling, made me pause. I couldn’t help but think about how difficult it must be to be outside
in such miserable weather without a place to call home.

As I watched them pass by, something inside me urged me to act. I couldn’t enjoy my
meal knowing someone outside might be hungry. Without much thought, I grabbed the plate of
food I had just made and hurried outside. I approached the person cautiously, trying not to make
them uncomfortable. “Hi,” I said gently, “I just made this meal and thought you might like it. It’s
warm, and you might be hungry.” To my surprise, they looked at me kindly but shook their head.
“Thank you,” they said, “but I can’t take it.”

Still trying to help, I asked one more time “are you sure” It’s really no trouble, and I’d be
happy to share. At that moment, I felt a mix of emotions. Part of me was sad that I couldn’t help
them in the way I had intended. But I was more impressed by the integrity this person had
shown. Despite the fact that this individual may have had very little and had nothing to offer,
they nevertheless refused to accept what was not theirs, even when it was freely offered. Even
though they had the chance to accept help and eat a warm meal they still chose not to take it.

In conclusion, integrity is something we can all practice, regardless of our circumstances.

Whether it’s through our school/environment, friendships, or even encounters with strangers, it’s
about staying true to our values. In the end, I may not have given the person my meal, but they
gave me a lesson in integrity that I will carry with me.
