DJJ3103: STRENGTH OF MATERIALS

BEAM DEFLECTION IN CANTILEVER BEAM

Chapter 5

1.0 Experiment outcome

At the end of this laboratory students should be able to:

a) Conduct appropriately lab work in groups according to the standards of procedures
b) Analyze critically the lab work data in relation to theoretical value.
c) Write report appropriately from data obtained in lab work

2.0 Theory

A beam deflects when a force or number of forces acts to it. Knowing how to estimate the value
of deflection may help engineers to design a beam appropriately and safe. The value of deflection
may help engineers to predict the actual position where the beam/structure starts to fail. There
are a number of methods that is used to estimate the value of deflection, for example Double
Integration Method and Macaulay Method. In general the first step to determine the deflection is
deriving the moment equation of a beam. Then by integrating the equation twice the equation
obtained may help determine deflection at a specific point.

3.0 Apparatus/Equipment

No Name of Parts
1 Steel bar 6 x 20 x1000
2 Rider for weight
10011000mm
3 Suspender for weights with 5N
4 Dial gauge with holder
weights
5 Support pillar with clamp

Esteel = 210 x 103 N/mm2

4.0 Safety Precautions

1. Make sure the student follow the laboratory or workshop safety regulators.
2. Experiment must be conduct by lecturers or experience lab assistance

5.0 Procedures

1. Fasten the support pillar to the frame

2. Clamp the bar to the support pillar
3. Place the rider on the bar and lock in the required position
4. Fasten the dial gauge to the frame with the holder in such a way that the tracer pin is
touching the flattened part of the rider bolt
5. Set the dial gauge to zero with the bar unloaded. To do so, adjust the holder and
rotate the scale for precise adjustment.
6. Suspend (hang) the load weight, then read the deflection on the dial gauge and
record the reading.

6.0 Results/Data

By deriving the equation, the deflection on the beam is :

7.0 Discussion

1. Discuss how to minimize the difference of value obtained for measured deflection and
calculated deflection.
2. Plot a deflection versus distance graph and analyze the graph obtained.
