Formwork Method Statement

A. Scope
This method statement outlines the procedures and controls required for the
installation of formwork during structural concrete operations. It covers the
assembly, erection, and final positioning of formwork, ensuring a systematic and safe
approach.

B. Procedure
1. Adherence to Specifications
• All formwork activities will strictly adhere to the project specifications and
requirements.
2. Formwork Planning
• The project engineer, after reviewing structural drawings, will plan the
sizes, quantities, and types of formwork needed. Consultation with the
structural engineer may be necessary.
• Depending on the project schedule, the number of times the formwork
will be reused will be determined.
• External designers may be engaged for specific formwork systems.
3. Material Procurement
• The availability of formwork materials will be verified through
coordination with the procurement manager.
• Decisions regarding purchasing, hiring, or reusing formwork materials will
be made based on project needs.
4. Fabrication Checks
• During the fabrication of formwork shutters, dimensions will be cross-
checked to avoid adjustments during erection.
• Reference numbers will be painted on all panels to ensure correct
positioning.
5. Component Verification
• Verify the correct size and spacing of props, shores, waling, bearers,
clamps, and tie rods.

• The formwork designer will ensure that the falsework system can handle
the imposed loads as per specifications.

• Check that the falsework is securely braced and sits on a stable

foundation.

6. Forms Fastening
• Forms attached to previously cast concrete must be tightly secured to
prevent grout loss. Use cellular foam plastic strips to create seals if
necessary.
7. Quality Checks
• Inspect the quality of shutter lining, tightness of bolts and wedges, and
the placement of built-in items, inserts, and other embedments.

• Ensure neat tie-rod holes that can be patched or plugged later.

8. Stop Ends and Joint Formers
• Pay special attention to the rigidity and alignment of stop ends and joint
formers.
9. Cleanup
• Remove all tie-wire clippings and nails to prevent staining of the
formwork and concrete.
10. Access and Safety
• Provide adequate access and working platforms for the concreting team.

• Install toe boards and guardrails as required for safety.

11. Spreader or Lifting Beam
• When placing formwork, use a spreader or lifting beam to prevent
distortion.
12. Steel Props
• Erect adjustable steel props in a plumb position and verify their verticality
with a spirit level.

• Do not use bent, creased, rusted, or damaged props.

13. Release Agent
• Apply the appropriate release agent to new timber and plywood forms,
first 36 hours in advance and then a second coat just before use. Avoid
excessive use to prevent staining or concrete retardation.
14. Monitoring
• Regularly check wedges and fastenings to ensure they remain secure.
Grout loss may indicate movement.
15. Tie Bars
• When using unsleeved tie bars, slightly ease them before concrete sets,
and remove them safely as soon as possible.

16. Striking the Formwork

• Striking the formwork requires approval as per Appendix CONC/04/A.

• Ensure adequate safety measures during formwork removal.

• Commence cleaning the formwork faces immediately after striking.

• Proper storage and identification of formwork for future use are

essential.
17. Safety During Formwork Operations
• Mark the weights of large prefabricated formwork sections to avoid
exceeding crane lifting capacity.

• Use the lifting points provided and, if necessary, employ a spreader or

lifting beam to prevent distortion.

• Verify the secure connection of vertical soldiers to walings during lifting.

• Ensure that fire extinguishers in working order are readily accessible near
stored formwork.
This method statement emphasizes the importance of careful planning, quality checks, and
safety measures during formwork activities to ensure the successful execution of structural
concrete operations. Always prioritize safety and compliance with project specifications.
