Professional Conduct
Learning Objectives:

At the end of this lesson learner should be able to:


1. Explain the concept of professional conduct;
2. Appreciate the importance of professional conduct; and
3. Discuss some professional behavior’s tips.

Learning Content

Definition:
Special ethics is the study of the application of the general principles of
morality to particular department of human activity, individual or social

PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
- a sub-branch of special ethics
- a set of moral code to which every profession must subscribe aims
to guide the actuations of the professional in the practice of his profession.

Examples of Professional Ethics:


1) medical ethics
2) business ethics
3) legal ethics
4) code of ethics of teachers
5) code of ethics of public officials
6) POLICE ETHICS = a practical science that treats the principles of
human morality and duty as applied to law enforcement.
I. Definition:
Professional Conduct (professional na pag uugali) is that field of
regulation of members of a professional organization or body either acting
under the law or under contractual authority.
Professional Conduct is the accepted manner in which a
professional is reasonably expected to act.
Originally, professional conduct is under taken by private
professional organization of bodies under the contractual authority
through establishment of code of professional conduct and ethical
standards that would serve as a guide for each and every members of the
professional organization.
But later every professions are being regulated by the government
through legislation. Through some statute certain programs offering in the
higher education was formally professionalized through the conduct of
licensure examination subject to regulation by the professional Regulation
Commission. At present many profession practices are governed both by
statute and by contractual powers such as code of conduct and ethical
standards set by respective professional organizations or bodies.

Importance of Professional Conduct


As professional, one should maintain his/her ethical behavior and
establish professional conduct. Professionalism is the conduct, aims or
qualities that characterize or mark a profession or professional person;
Professionalism implies quality of workmanship or service. That a
professional should conduct himself with proficiency, integrity, and honesty in
dealing with the people he/she will serve and not to exploit them and blemish
(dungis) the image of the profession he/she belongs. Professional conduct
protects the client, the profession, the professional, and the public at large

Professional Conduct in the workplace


Professional conduct in the workplace is a form of professional
etiquette which relates to courteous and disciplined conduct. Knowing how to
properly deal with co-workers, superiors, subordinates, clients and the public
with the end in view of establishing harmonious relationship that would
promote efficiency and effectiveness in the performance of duty and in the
attainment of the vision-mission of the company or corporation.

Twelve (12) Professional Behavior Tips:


The following are some of the tips on how a professional should behave or
conduct himself in the workplace.
1. Honesty
Be sincere in dealing with others but also observe secrecy on
matters of confidence or confidential information or those that are
privilege in nature. It is a pleasant experience to work with people who
are true and sincere in their dealing with others.

2. Respect
Respect is something that is due to everyone no matter what is
your position or standing the workplace, every person deserve to be
respected as human being. There is that principle that you respect
people not because they are respectable but simply because that is the
attitude of a person who is respectable.

3. Meetings
Being on time is respect to other people’s time. If you have
important meeting or engagement make sure that you come on time
and do not just be an audience make sense of your presence by
contributing your thoughts, idea and impression of the things being
discussed. Be a good listener and respect the organizer, convenor,
speaker, or facilitator and do not take over when someone is explaining
or trying to talk. Follow the procedure and ask reasonable questions.

4. Communication
Speak clearly and politely. Observe proper protocols in making
conversation and correspondence to or for authorities, officials,
superiors, subordinates and co-workers. Be mindful of the your words
and your tone in speaking. As much as possible do not entertain
gossip and focus on your work and things that will contribute to the
success of the organization.

5. Time Management
Professional people wake up early morning. Attend to his work
early and meets deadline religiously. Make sure to have your time
table. And list important workloads and indicate priorities.

6. Integrity
Be always upright in character. Do what is need to be done and
avoid unnecessary things. Avoid developing bad work habits and be
considerate to others. Avoid prejudice and be fair in your dealing with
co-workers and client.

7. Safety
Be mindful of the safety policies and procedures in the
company. Report any hazards or condition that may brought about
damage, loss or injuries.

8. Corporate goals
Bare in mind the company’s vision-mission, goals and objectives
and do your best to contribute in the attainment of the
organization’s goals and objectives.

9. Dress
Wearing of proper uniform (If there is) or clean dress that is
appropriate to the occasion commands respect. If the organization
or company sets it dress code, make sure to observe it every time
you report for work/duty. Avoid wearing clothes that are provocative
or too revealing.

10. Accountability
A professional must take responsibility for his/her works,
actions, deeds. Avoid pointing fingers for it may not help in solving the
problem of the company. Always remember that for every authority or
duty that is vested, there is a commensurate accountability.

11. Teamwork
There are things that can be done solely, but there are many
projects or mission that can better to be accomplish if there is
cooperation and coordination between and among people concerned
for the execution or implementation. We all have our differences but we
should used it as an advantage rather than a disadvantage by
capitalizing on each and everyone’s strength and complimenting their
weaknesses.

12. Commitment
Dedication to work and devotion to one’s duty will can make
impossible things possible. Being professional is doing your best efforts
towards the attainment of the organization’s goals and objectives.
