The Hyperbolic Functions
• Certain combinations of the exponential function 𝑒 x and 𝑒 –x
occur frequently in mathematics, science, and engineering.
These functions are called hyperbolic functions.
• They are called hyperbolic functions because they can be
related to a hyperbola. Recall that the trigonometric functions
are also called circular functions because of their relation to a
circle.
