SKAA 4412 2

Q1. (a) By using any example in the civil engineering field, explain how you can
make good decisions based on the links between data, information and
knowledge that are available.
(12 marks)

(b) List all the phases involved in the development process of information system.
Based on your understanding, briefly explain the effect of the Planning Phase
in terms of cost estimation.
(13marks)
(25 marks)

Q2. (a) Draw and explain the rules for each Data Flow Diagram component.
(8 marks)

(b) The ABC Precast Manufacturer want to build new information integrated
system between departments in their company. But to do so, they have to
make a decision based on the systems analyst’s analysis. As a systems analyst,
you have to come out with the Data Flow Diagram (DFD) to show the flow of
process that the new system will involve and significantly the need to build a
new system. There are four (4) major processes involved which are Order,
Design, Production and Shipping. The System starts with Customer sending
the order form and ends with the shipping of product to Customer from the
warehouse where the end products are stored. Table Q2(a) shows the details of
each process in level 2.

Based on the given information, draw;

(i) The level 2 DFD
(ii) The level 1 DFD, and
(iii) The Context Diagram
to define the process of precast components production system for ABC
Precast Manufacturer.

developer. Based on your knowledge, explain the advantages and
disadvantages of prototyping in developing an information system?
(8 marks)

(b) You are assigned by your company’s manager to develop an order system for
a factory producing IBS components. You are requested to prepare a proposal
for the system by developing a paper prototype for the system. The prototype
must include at least interfaces for login, register new user, list of company’s
products together with their unit prices, button for ordering the product, add
and edit product entry or exit, and also the print out of the product entry or exit
records, etc. You may make your own assumptions for any information not
