CSE2029 Data Comunications and Computer Networks Handout
CSE2029 Data Comunications and Computer Networks Handout
Aim of the course: This course introduces fundamental concepts in the design of computer communication
networks, their protocols, and applications.
Course Overview and Context: This course studies the standard models for the layered approach to
communication between autonomous machines in a network, and the main characteristics of data
transmission across various physical link types.
Course Outcomes: At the end of the course the students should be able to
CO1: Understand fundamental underlying principles of computer networking
CO3: Explain the way protocols in the Internet work and the requirements for designing network
protocols.
Lecture Plan
• “Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach,” by Jim Kurose and Keith Ross, Pearson, 7th
edition.
• “Computer Networks,” by Andrew S. Tanenbaum, Prentice Hall, 4th edition.
Assessment Pattern:
The final grade will be based on the marks/ grades obtained in the mid-semester and end-semester
evaluation along with other assessments defined in the assessment table. The relative grading method
defined in the academic regulations of the university will be followed to grade the students. The student
has to secure a minimum of 40% of marks after completing all the assessments in the following table
to become eligible for grading.
Assessment Components:
Student’s Responsibilities:
● Attend lectures/discussion sessions and labs to obtain all the course materials.
● Check announcements on Maitri/Google-classroom and emails regularly.
● Regularly, check your marks on the Maitri and make sure they are up to date.
Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend the classes regularly. Failure to attend the classes
regularly and adhere to the expected attendance percentage will result in a reduction of the grade as per
the University’s grading policy.
Assignments: Evaluation will be based on both continuous assessments and the exams. The necessary
training required on different software and equipment should be done beyond classroom sessions.
Late assignment submission policy: Late submission of the assignment is not allowed, and any late
submission will be awarded “0” marks in that assignment.
Make-up policy: No make-up work will be given for unexcused absences. The faculty needs to be informed
in advance in case the student is not going to be able to submit an assignment or take any evaluation
component, and it is at the discretion of the faculty to sanction make up for an evaluation component.
Behavioural Expectations: No mobile phones and other gadgets causing distraction are permitted in the
class.
