NAME CHM 151 Fall 2024 Chapter 8 Quiz

This quiz covers the chapter in Ebbing dealing with electronic configuration and periodic
properties. There is no multiple-choice section. There should be space for answers in the
quiz.

Representing electronic configurations

• n-subshell form
o note that sum of superscripts adds to the atomic number
o The superscript for each subshell indicates the number in the given subshell
• Core notation form (shorthand for n-subshell form)
o The noble gas core used must come from the preceding row in the periodic
table
o Only noble gases can be used
• Orbital diagrams
o No orbital can hold more than 2-electrons
o Hund’s rule requires that electrons in equivalent orbitals within a subshell
must have parallel spins until the subshell is half-filled

Carbon n-subshell example

Using the orbital filling chart the electronic configuration is:

1s22s22p2

Carbon core notation example

[He]2s22p2 Helium is the core an has 2 electrons

Anomalies
The orbital filling chart follows the n, l rules for quantum numbers. There are exceptions to
the orbital filling chart:

 In Row 4 (period 4) there are 2 exceptions at chromium and copper where an s-

electron moves into a d-orbital of the 3rd shell
 In row 5 (period 5) there are multiple exceptions where s and d orbital electrons of
the 5th shell and 4th shell respectively, change places
 In the 6th and 7th rows where f electrons are involved the are often changes in order
of s, d, and f electrons

The 4th row is the easiest to remember. For the 5th, 6th and 7th rows refer to the electronic
configuration chart in the text.

q. In

Ions
▪ Anions gain electrons so add electrons equivalent to the charge to the atomic number
▪ Cations lose electrons so subtract electrons equivalent to the charge from the atomic
number in the following order
o p-electrons first (if present)
o s – electrons next (almost always present)
o d-electrons last when present
2. Complete the electronic configuration of the following ions (use core notation form). In
some cases, a noble gas configuration may be the answer. (30 pts)
