Module-2-3-Practice-Problems (Machine Design 2)
1. A 4-in, journal-bearing assembly is made for class RC 6 fit. Assume that the natural spread of the manufacturing
process will be about 75 % of the tolerance. Compute the probable maximum and minimum clearances (which
occur when the processes are not centered) and compare with the allowance. Make a sketch of the journal and
hole properly dimensioned.
2. A steel rod, as-rolled AISI C1035, is fastened to a 7/8-in., as-rolled C1020 plate by means of a cotter that is made
of as-rolled C1020, in the manner shown. (a) Determine all dimensions of this joint if it is to withstand a reversed
shock load F =10 kips , basing the design on yield strengths. (b) If all fits are free-running fits, decide upon
tolerances and allowances
3. A part of a conveyor system for a production operation is shown in the Figure. The complete system will include
several hundred hanger assemblies like this one. Design the horizontal bar that extends between two adjacent
conveyor hangers and that supports a fixture at its midpoint. The empty fixture weighs 85 lb. A cast iron engine
block weighing 225 lb is hung on the fixture to carry it from one process to another, where it is then removed. It is
expected that the bar will experience several thousand cycles of loading and unloading of the engine blocks. The
pin at the middle of the horizontal bar where the fixture is hung has been specified to have a diameter of 0.50 in.
Those at each end where the horizontal bar is connected to the conveyor hangers are each 0.375 in.
4. A bracket is made by welding a rectangular bar to a circular rod, as shown in Figure. Design the bar and the rod to
carry a static load of 250 lb.
5. Consider the state of plane stress shown above left where the two normal components of stress, σ x and σ y , are
unknown. The Mohr’s circle for this state of stress is provided in the figure above right. Determine numerical values
for the two normal components of stress σ x and σ y . There may be more than one set of answers; you need only
find one set.
6. At a point A above the neutral axis of the beam shown in the figure, the state of plane stress can be described by
the insert on the right-hand side of the figure. The maximum in-plane shear stress at this point is τmax = 13MPa,
the normal stress in the x-direction is σx = 20MPa, and normal stress in the y-direction is σy = 0MPa. (30 pts)
a) Determine the magnitude of the shear stress, τxy, on the x and y faces.
b) Determine the sign of the shear stress τxy, . HINT: Determine first the direction of the shear force acting on the
cross-section with normal x at point A.
c) Draw Mohr’s circle corresponding to the state of stress at point A. Clearly indicate the location of the center of
the circle, the radius of the circle and point X (which represents the stress state on the x-face) in this drawing.
d) Determine the two in-plane principal stresses at this point. Determine the rotation angle of the stress element
for each principal stress.
e) Show the locations of the principal stresses and of the in-plane maximum shear stress on your Mohr’s circle in
c) above.
7. Compute the estimated actual endurance limit for SAE 5160 OQT 1300 steel rod with a diameter of 20.0 mm. It is
to be machined and subjected to repeated and reversed bending stress. A reliability of 99% is desired.
8. Compute the estimated actual endurance limit for SAE 301 stainless steel rod, 1/2 hard, with a diameter of 0.60
in. It is to be machined and subjected to repeated axial tensile stress. A reliability of 99.9% is desired.
9. Using the Modified Mohr diagram, estimate the design factor N for a gray cast iron Grade 40A ( Sut = 40 ksi, Suc =
-140 ksi ) principal stress of 20 ksi and – 90 ksi.
10. A cantilevered boom is part of an assembly machine and is made from an American Standard steel beam, S4*7.7.
A tool with a weight of 500 lb moves continuously from the end of the 60-in beam to a point 10 in from the support.
Draw a sketch of the variation of stress versus time, and compute the maximum stress, minimum stress, mean
stress, alternating stress, and stress ratio, R.
