Another parameter sometimes used in the analysis of one-dimensional
isentropic flow of ideal gases is 𝑀∗ ,which is the ratio of the local velocity to
the speed of sound at the throat:
𝑉
𝑀∗ =
𝑎∗
It can also be expressed as:
𝑉𝑎 𝑀𝑎 𝑀√𝑘𝑅𝑇 𝑇
𝑀∗ = = = = 𝑀 √
𝑎 𝑎∗ 𝑎∗ √𝑘𝑅𝑇 ∗ 𝑇∗
Where M is the local Mach number, T is the local temperature and 𝑇 ∗ is the critical
temperature.
Not that the parameter 𝑀∗ differs from the Mach number M in that 𝑀∗ is
the local velocity nondimensionalized with respect to the sonic velocity at
the throat, wherease M is the local velocity nondimensionalized with
respect to the local sonic velocity.
