EM-I . Dc Generators
EM-.1 Aim on the experiment:

The object of this experiments is to : measure the following

characteristics of DC generators

1- No-Load characteristics ( Ea- Im) where Ea is the armature

voltage , and the maximum excitation field current of the DC
generator.

Equipment

M = D.C. Motor
G = D.C Generator under test
TG = Tachometer (to read The r.p.m.)
Rmy = Shunt rheostat (220V, 2A, 440 Ω)
Im = Ammeter - 1 A
U = Voltmeter - 0,30,150,300 V
F = Power supply

Motor ratings:-------------------------------------------------------------------

Generator ratings:--------------------------------------------------------------

Procedure

1.1 Connect (M ) as D.C. motor and (G) as D.C. generator

according with

the circuit diagram.

1.2 Note the ratings of the D.C. generator shown on the name
plate. These rating must not be exceeded at any time during
the laboratory exercises.

1.3 Turn on the fixed D.C. voltage switch and adjust the shunt
rheostat of the motor (M) to obtain the maximum excitation
current of the motor.

1.4 Adjust the shunt rheostat (R my) of the D.C. generator so as to

obtain
the minimum excitation current.
1.5 Set the variable D.C. voltage control to zero and turn on the
variable D.C. voltage switch. Then turn up the rotor voltage to
230 V. The machine then starts and comes up to about 1500
r.p.m. The machine should rotate in the direction of the arrow.

2. Measure the NO-LOAD characteristic U=f(Im), i.e. the induced

no-load voltage as function of the excitation current.

2.1 Adjust the torque meter to bring the speed to 1400 r.p.m. this
speed must be maintained constant throughout the experiment
and must therefore be checked at every reading. Vary the
excitation current (Im) in steps of 0.1 A from zero to maximum
at every step read the excitation current (I m) and the induced
voltage read on the voltmeter(U).

2.2 Vary the excitation current in steps from minimum to

Maximum and for every step make a note of the excitation
current (Im), and (Ea)is the armature voltage the induced
e.m.f. will differ owing to magnetic hysteresis in iron parts of
the machine.

Check the speed at every reading.

2.3 Repeat steps 2.1 at speed of 1200 rev/min and fill results in
Table 1.

2.4 Draw on the same graph with a common Im axis the no-load
characteristics for
increasing and decreasing Im at both 1400 rev/min and 1200
rev/min.

Table 1.

Question 1
Why does the no-load characteristics differ for the increasing and
decreasing Im?

Question 2
How the reduction in the speed from 1400 rev/min to 1200 rev/min
has affected Eaat the same field current.

Question 3
Why does the No-Load characteristics differ for increasing and
decreasing the excitation current.?
