The Role and Impact of Sign Language Interpreters
The Role and Impact of Sign Language Interpreters
Interpreters
Abstract
This examines the role and impact of sign language interpreters in facilitating communication
for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. It explores the importance of interpreters in various
settings, the challenges they face, and the implications of their work on inclusivity and
accessibility. The review incorporates recent statistics to highlight the current state of deaf
communication and identifies gaps in the existing research, suggesting areas for further study
to enhance the effectiveness of sign language interpretation.
Introduction
Sign language interpreters play a crucial role in bridging the communication gap between
deaf and hearing individuals. Their work is essential in educational, medical, legal, and social
settings, ensuring that deaf individuals have equal access to information and services. This
literature review aims to explore the significance of sign language interpreters, the challenges
they encounter, and the broader implications of their work on inclusivity and accessibility.
Methodology
This review includes peer-reviewed articles, books, conference papers, and relevant statistics
published between 2000 and 2023. Databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and JSTOR
were utilized, using keywords like "sign language interpreters," "deaf communication,"
"accessibility," and "inclusive education." Studies were included if they focused on the role,
challenges, and impact of sign language interpreters. Articles that did not meet these criteria
were excluded.
Additionally, the review incorporates insights from a recent project that used a computer's
camera to recognize sign language in real time and provide interpretations immediately. The
development process involved creating a custom dataset of various American Sign Language
signs and training a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model using deep learning
techniques implemented in Python with the Keras library.
Body
1. Role of Sign Language Interpreters
Educational Settings
Sign language interpreters are vital in ensuring that deaf students receive an education
comparable to their hearing peers. Studies show that interpreters help in understanding
complex subjects and participating in class discussions (Smith & Allman, 2015).
Medical Settings
Interpreters facilitate communication between deaf patients and healthcare providers,
ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment. Research highlights the importance of interpreters
in improving health outcomes for deaf individuals (Jones et al., 2018).
Legal Settings
In legal contexts, interpreters ensure that deaf individuals fully understand their rights and the
proceedings. The presence of interpreters is critical for fair trials and legal processes (Miller,
2019).
Interpreters often face challenges in accurately conveying the nuances of spoken language
and sign language. Ethical dilemmas arise when interpreting sensitive or controversial
information (Witter-Merithew & Johnson, 2005).
There is a need for more comprehensive training programs and professional recognition for
interpreters. Many face issues related to job security and professional development
(Bontempo & Levitzke-Gray, 2009).
Social Inclusion
Employment Opportunities
Access to sign language interpreters can enhance employment opportunities for deaf
individuals, allowing them to engage fully in the workplace (Leigh et al., 2020).
