Grade 10

Computer file management : Files, folders

and drives
Difference between files and folders
•A file could be a document, picture, video clip, song,
spreadsheet etc – the level of data representation we
will mostly work with

•A folder is a "container" for files that we would like to

group together – like a ring-binder file containing lots of
papers

•A folder can also contain folders inside it, named

subfolders – these act like “dividers” to sub-divide files
Drives
• When storage devices (where data can be permanently
stored) are connected to a computer, we call them drives
• Examples of drives include a hard drive, a DVD drive,
flash disk etc.
• Each drive is allocated a letter of the alphabet by which
we can identify it. As devices are connected to the
computer, they are allocated a "name" or "letter". Example
- C: or F:
• Hard drives can be sub-divided into smaller drives, called
partitions. Each partition has its own name, as the
computer views it as a separate drive
Paths
• A path is like the "route" or "path" to where a
specific file can be found, starting at the drive
name, and ending with the filename.
• Example: The path to a file stored inside the
2013 folder, which in turn can be found in the
grade 10 folder, which is stored on a flash
stick, could look like this:
F:\grade10\2013

Q and A...
• How many times can you partition a hard
drive, or how many drives can you connect to
a computer??
• As many times /drives as there are letters in
the alphabet, thus a maximum of 26
File manager
• File management in Windows XP and later is
done through Windows Explorer
• This is where you can do things like copy,
move, open, delete, search for files etc.
• We can also set permissions (attributes) such
as archive, read-only, hidden or system and to
associate file types with programs
• The left panel of the window usually shows a
list of directories, and the right side the
content of the current directory
