STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING ASSIGNMENTS 2024

CENG 404/ CE418/ CEQS406

ALL Assignments are due on the 11th of October 2024, 1200pm.

Only Soft Copy Submission is required.
Submit your calculations in a readable excel format. All formulae should be
included.
Your Drawings must be clear
Assignment 2
Design a waffle slab for an edge panel of a floor system that is constructed on a 10
m square module. The total dead load is kN/m2 and the imposed load is 3 kN/m 2.
The materials of construction are grade 30 concrete and grade 460 reinforcement.

The proportions chosen for rib width, rib depth, depth of topping and rib spacing
meet various requirements set out in BS8110: Part 1, section 3.6. The cover
required for mild exposure is 25 mm.

Assignment 3
The floor of a building constructed of flat slabs is 35 m×28 m. The column centres
are 7 m in both directions and the building is braced with shear walls. The panels
are to have drops of 3 m × 3 m. The depth of the drops is 250 mm and the slab
depth is 200 mm. The internal columns are 400 mm square and the column heads
are 800 mm square. The imposed loading is 4 KN/m 2. The materials are grade 30
concrete and grade 460 reinforcement. Design an edge panel next to an internal
panel on one side and show the reinforcement on a sketch.
Assignment 4
Attached is a reinforced concrete office building located in the centre of a city. The
wind speed is assumed to be 15 m/s . The roof and floor slab are 200 thick. The
grade of concrete is 30MPa and that of steel is 460 MPa. The roof and floor slab
loads excluding self-weight are 6 KN/m 2, the roof and floor-imposed loads are 3.5
KN/m2. The columns are 400 mm square.
Given that the wall thickness is 200 mm including finishes, prepare a full design of
walls W1, W2, W3, W4.

Assignment 5
Water tanks are a vital infrastructure for communities. Two circular tanks, each
with a capacity of 1.5 ML is required for Musorowegomo Township. The Circular
tanks have flexible connection at the base. Prepare the full design of the
reinforced concrete circular water tank with flexible base situated on the ground.
Calculations should be done for each 1 m height.

Assignment 6

In an industrial building, the columns are arranged at 4 m centres in rows 9.5 m

apart. The floor consists of a 180 mm thick slab and is supported on grade 43 steel
UB that span been the columns as shown in Fig below. Some of the design data is
given as follows:

Design data

Fcu = 30 MPa

Fy = 460 MPa

Dead load excluding self-weight: 5 KN/m2

Imposed load: 4 KN/m2

Slab reinforcement Y12 @200 c/c top and bottom

Double shear studs are used.

Composite construction

i. Classify the steel section, assuming there is no composite action, check the
adequacy of the steel section with respect to moments and shear
ii. Given that there is composite action, prepare the full design.
