Eric Moussambani – a different type of hero

Twelve months before the 2000 Olympic Games held in Sydney, Eric Moussambani couldn’t swim and had
never been outside his tiny country, Equatorial Guinea. 1 ______ It’s only given under conditions: in this case,
his country didn’t have full training facilities. Yet in the most unusual circumstances, Eric won his first Olympic
race and became an international hero.
With eight months to go, Eric began teaching himself to swim by practising in a 12-metre pool in a local hotel.
He was allowed to use it between 5:00 and 6:00 am, three times a week. 2 ______ With no coach, it was local
fishermen there who taught him how to move his legs.
Eric thought he was entering the 50-metre race. However, when he arrived in Sydney, he discovered that he
had been entered in the 100-metre race, a distance he had never swum. 3 ______ Eric would watch them
and try to copy their technique during these sessions. He also got some help from the South African coach
but was worried because he didn’t know how to coordinate his breathing.
On the day of his qualifying heat, Eric faced two other competitors. 4 ______ So now Eric only had to beat
the clock. But he also had to complete the race in a professional style in front of 17,000 spectators to have
a chance of qualifying for the final.
5 ______ But with the crowd cheering, he eventually made it to the finish line. His time was 1 minute and 53
seconds: a personal best time for him but the slowest time in Olympic history and outside the time he needed
to qualify for the next round. But Eric became a celebrity in his country, with the first 50-metre swimming pool
built in his name.

A Fortunately, all the swimmers trained together in the days leading up to the race.
B They were strong Olympic swimmers, but they were disqualified for starting the race early.
C The other swimmers seemed to be tiring, which was the moment Eric was waiting for.
D He started confidently but soon got slower.
E He was only allowed to enter the Olympics because he was given a ‘wild card’ or free entry.
