3-6 Arithmetic Sequences

Arithmetic Sequences

 When you list the times and distances in order, each list forms a sequence.
 A sequence is a list of numbers that may form a pattern.
o Each number in a sequence is a term.
 Arithmetic sequence is a sequence whose successive terms differ by the same nonzero
number d, called the common difference.

Terms of an
a1  1st term of an arithmetic sequence d  Common difference
Arithmetic Sequence
nth Term of an
Arithmetic Sequence Formula  an = a1 + (n − 1)d

Example 1: Determine whether each sequence is an arithmetic sequence. Explain.

a. 0.7, 0.5, 0.3, 0.1,… 1 1 1 1
b. – 3 , –9 , –27 , –81 …

Example 2: Find the next three terms of the arithmetic sequence 36, 39, 42, 45, … .
Step 1 Find the common difference.
36 39 42 45 The common difference, d, is ______

Step 2 Use the common difference of the sequence to find the next three terms.

45 ____ ____ ____

Example 3: Find the 25th term of the arithmetic sequence 2, -2, -6, -10, ….

Step 1 Find the common difference. Step 2 Find the 25th term.

2 -2 -6 -10 a n = a 1 + (n – 1)d

Example 4: The odometer on a car reads 60,473 on day 1. Every day, the car is driven 54
miles. If this pattern continues, what is the odometer reading on day 28?

Independent Practice:

Determine whether each sequence is an arithmetic sequence. Write yes or no.

1) 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, . . . 2) 8, 4, 0, -4, -8, . . .

Find the next three terms of each arithmetic sequence.

3) 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, . . . 4) 4, 0, -4, -8, -12, . . 5) 29, 35, 41, 47, . . .

Find the given term of each arithmetic sequence.

6) 5, 10, 15, 20, …; 17th term 8) – 2, – 5, – 8, – 11, …; 41st term

7) 121, 110, 99, 88, …; 10th term 9) – 30, – 22, – 14, – 6, …; 20th term
