7 simple strategies to stop

you from overthinking

written by Hashim Hashim

1. Micro-moments of rest:

Like idle time in the elevator or doing

routine activities (showering or doing
the dishes).

The more of these moments you

capture, the less room there is for
unnecessary overthinking.
2. Planning days:

Follow the 80/20 rule — 20% planning

and 80% actioning.

Most people do a lot of planning and

very little actioning.

Dedicate a time and day for planning

(weekly works best) and focus the rest of
the time on actioning.
3. Practice mindfulness:

Mindfulness is a training for the mind

and can help you in two things:

1. Attention: by having a sharp focus you

see with clarity.

2. Awareness: realizing when you’re

engaging in unproductive thinking is
the first step to stopping it.
4. Prioritize WIN:

Big tasks can be overwhelming and lead

to overthinking.

Break them down into smaller pieces

and focus on What’s Important Now.

You progress through action, not by

overthinking it.
5. Practice self-compassion:

It may be counterintuitive for some, but

overthinking may stem from self-doubt
and perfectionism.

Remind yourself that it’s okay to make

mistakes.

Progress is more important than

perfection.
6. Journal:

Unloading your thoughts and feelings

on paper makes them easier to process.

A journal can be your trusted friend,

coach, and therapist.

Pro tip: start with using bullet points to

list your thoughts. As you progress, you
can move to free-flow writing.
7. Use a calendar:

My favorite strategy for avoiding

unnecessary planning and overthinking
is by pre-committing my schedule to
what matters.

If you’re too busy learning, growing, and

progressing, you’ll crowd out
unnecessary thinking altogether.
PS. The idea is not to stop caring about
what matters to you.

But unnecessary overthinking is a waste

of your energy and time.

It is okay to think things over and

deliberate them, especially if the
decision is important.

For this reason, you want to conserve

your energy for what matters.
That’s all 7!

your network (so you inspire them to
stop overthinking, too).
