1. Planning
 Basic managerial function.

 Determines the course of action to be followed in
achieving organizational objective to achieve better
results.
 Decision in advance, 3Ws & 1H
 Concerned with the mental state of a manager.
 Process: gather information, lay down the
objective(s), develop plan premises, examine
alternate courses of action, evaluate action
patterns, review limitations and implement plans.

2. Organizing
 Arrange, guide, coordinate, direct and control the

activities of other factors of production, viz., men
material, money and machines so as to accomplish
the objectives of the organization.
 Establishing and intentional structure of roles for
people in an organization to fill.
 Process of identifying and grouping work to be
performed, defining and delegating responsibility
and authority and establishing relationships for the
purpose of enabling people to work most effectively
together in accomplishing objectives.

 Process of organizing are as follows:

 Classify or group the work
 Assign these groups of activities or work to
individuals
 Delegate authority and fix responsibility
 Coordinate these authority-responsibility
relationships of various activities

2. Organizing
 3 Types of Organization

 Line Organization. Authority flows
vertically from the top of the hierarchy to the
bottom.
 Functional Organization. Work is divided
into different departments. Each department
deals in one type of work and it specializes in
different functions.
 Line and Staff Organization. Provides for
specialists with line executives. It is a
combination of line and functional form of
organization.

3. Staffing
 Involves manning the positions created by

organization process.

 It consists of manpower planning, recruitment,


selection and training, placement of manpower,
development, promotion, transfer and
appraisal, and determination of employee
remuneration.

4. Directing

 Concerned with carrying out the desired
plans.
 Initiates organized and planned action and
ensures effective performance by
subordinates towards the accomplishment of
group activities.

5. Leadership
 Process by which an executive or manager

imaginatively directs/guides and influences the
work of others in choosing and attaining
specified goals by mediating between the
individual and organization in such a manner
that both will get maximum satisfaction.
 Manager must possess the qualities of
foresight, drive, initiative, self-confidence, and
personal integrity.

6. Communication

 Essence of communication is getting the
receiver and the sender tuned together for
a particular message.
 Exchange of ideas, feelings, emotions
and knowledge and information between
two or more persons.
 Essential at all levels of management for
decision-making and planning. It
increases managerial capacity and
facilitates control.

7. Motivation
 Psychological process of creating urge among the
subordinates to do certain things or behave in the

desired manner.
 Act of stimulating some one or oneself to get a
desired course of action to push the right button to
get a desired reaction, a compliment, dollar raise, a
smile.
 It can be realized from the fact that performance of
a worker depends upon his ability and the
motivation.
 Incentives can be in a form of financial increase in
wage or non-financial (better working condition, job
security, recognition.

8. Supervision
 Refers to the job of overseeing subordinates at
work to ensure maximum utilization of
resources to get the required and directed
work done and to correct the subordinates
whenever they go wrong.

9. Coordination

 Channels the activities of various individuals in the
organization for the achievement of common goals.
It creates team spirit and helps in achieving goals
through collective efforts.
 It is the orderly arrangement of group efforts to
provide unity of action in the pursuit of common
objectives.

10. Controlling
 Determining what is being accomplished, that is

evaluating the performance, if necessary, applying
corrective measures to that the performance takes
place according to plans and predetermined
standards.
 Process of controlling involves: establishing
standards of performance, measuring actual
performance, comparing the actual
performance with the standard, finding
variances or deviations, if any, and taking
corrective action or measures.

CASE STORY

ISOM 213 – Organization and Management Concepts


Mr. Julian is a newly-appointed manager of ABC
Group of Companies and was tasked to manage a
newly-developed team. He was expected to
perform the 5 functions of management and he
was able to plan and organize activities for his
team that contributes to attaining the goals and
objectives of the company. He was able to assign
staff to the different tasks that are essential and
was able to influence his subordinates and letting
them share the responsibility.
CASE STORY

As the team competently completed their task and

was able to attain its goal to a minimum effort, an
observation was made by his supervisor as Mr.
Julian’s subordinates are starting to slack on their job
and was not able to surpass its current
accomplishment on the following months. Their
performance began to decrease by a small
percentage. Since their performance is still
manageable, the new manager did not mind at all
and did not make any adjustments and strategies, to
correct their behavior since he wanted to remain in a
close bond with his subordinates.
