The risk of loss in transit within inbound transportation encompasses a

range of issues that can disrupt supply chains and impact a company’s
operations and profitability. This risk includes physical loss, damage, or
theft of goods while they are being transported from suppliers to a
company’s facility. Causes can vary from inadequate packaging, poor
handling practices, or lack of security measures, to external factors such
as extreme weather, port congestion, or customs delays.

In the pharmaceutical industry, certain medications and vaccines are

temperature-sensitive and must be transported under strict conditions. In
2020, during the COVID-19 vaccine distribution, there were cases of
vaccines being damaged in transit due to improper temperature control.
For example, a batch of Moderna vaccines had to be discarded because it
was exposed to excessively cold temperatures, which rendered it
ineffective. This type of loss affects both supply chains and public health,
requiring companies to invest in specialized temperature-controlled
logistics to mitigate these risks.
