Assignment No-3
Q. 1. A unity feedback system has an open-loop transfer function

G(s) = K⁄s2 (s + 2)

(a) By sketching a root locus plot, show that the system is unstable for all values of K.
(b) Add a zero at s = - a (0 ≤ a < 2 ) and show that the addition of zero stabilizes the
system.
(c) If a = 1, sketch the root locus plot and determine approximately the value of K which
gives the greatest damping ratio for the oscillatory mode. Find also the value of this
damping ratio and the corresponding undamped natural frequency.

Q. 2. Sketch the polar plots of the transfer functions given below. Determine whether these
plots cross the real axis. If so, determine the frequency at which the plots cross the real axis
and the corresponding magnitude | G (jω) |.

(a) G(s) = 1⁄(1 + s)(1 + 2s) (b) G(s) = 1⁄s(1 + s)(1 + 2s)

(1+0.2s)(1+0.025s)
(c) G(s) = 1⁄s 2 (1 + s)(1 + 2s) (d) G(s) = s3 (1+0.005s)(1+0.001s)

Q. 3. Sketch the Bode plots showing the magnitude the decibels and phase angle in degrees as
a function of log frequency for the transfer functions given below. Determine the gain cross-
over frequency𝜔𝑒 ( the frequency at which the magnitude curve crosses the 0-db axis ) in
each case.
10
G(s) =
s(1+0.5s)(1+0.01s)
Q. 4 The frequency response test data of certain elements plotted on Bode diagrams and
asymptotically approximated are shown in Figure.1. Find the transfer function of each
element. (Elements are known to have minimum-phase characteristics).
