CONCEPT NOTE 4.2: MEDICINES AS HEALTH PRODUCTS

Medicine is the science or practice of diagnosing and treating diseases or injuries to

maintain good health.
Types of Medicine
1. Over – the – Counter Medicines (OTC)
These are medicines intended to treat minor illnesses such as:
 Body pains
 Coughs
 Colds
 Diarrhea
 Constipation
 Acne, etc.
Consumers can buy them directly in drugstores or in sari-sari stores even without a
prescription from a healthcare professional.
Some OTC medicines have active ingredients that may potentially cause discomfort onto
the person if used higher than the recommended dosage.

2. Prescription Medicines
These are medicines only intended for a specific patient and cannot be
easily purchased in pharmacies without a doctor’s prescriptions. Compared to
over-the- counter medicines, prescribed medicines are stronger and ca treat both
minor and major ailments. They have been under the protection of patent laws for
a certain number of years.

Some examples of prescribed medicines are:

 Antibiotic drugs
 Antidepressants drugs
 Antihypertensive drugs
 Stimulant drugs and
 Opioid painkillers.

PROTECTION FROM FRAUDULENT HEALTH PRODUCTS

 Health frauds include products that claim to prevent, treat, or cure diseases or
other health conditions but are not actually proven safe and effective.
 This leads to waste of money and delay in getting a proper diagnosis or treatment.
Worse, it may cause more serious or fatal injuries.
Some fraud updates:
 products that claim to "cure cancer
 allegedly an "all natural” alternative for erectile dysfunction
 commonly imported dietary supplements and non-prescription drug products
 illegally sold cancer treatments
 body building product labeled to contain steroids or steroid-like substances

Fraudulent products are usually advertised in:

1. newspapers
2. magazine ads
3. TV, and infomercials.
They sell these products in stores, in the Internet, or through mail to order
Catalogs.

Consumers spend money to buy these products hoping to find a cure for what ails them,
improve their well-being, or just to look better. However, they often times end up
becoming scam victims, cheated tor their money and steered away from useful and
proven to be effective treatments.

Ways to Identify Fraudulent Products:

1. These products claim to cure diseases like cancer and arthritis easily.
2. Companies use fake news or testimonials for their products.
3. The products do not have labels.
4. Unknown or not legally registered companies are distributing these products.
5. No tree trial and refund for unsatisfied costumers.
Ways to Protect Oneself from Quacks or Fraudulent Products:
1. Research first on the effectiveness of the products before purchasing them.
2. Check the reliability and credibility of the company.
3. See if the products have been proven, tested, and passed by the Bureau of Food
and Drugs (BFAD).
4. Know the credentials of the medical health professionals.
5. Seek the help of authorities if you become a victim of fraud.
