1. General Requirements for Work Equipment (Criteria 9.1)


 All work equipment should be safe, suitable for the task, and maintained in good working order.
Employers are responsible for assessing risks associated with each type of equipment, ensuring
it meets safety standards, and that employees are trained in its proper use.
 Equipment should also be inspected regularly, with any detected faults or defects immediately
reported and resolved.
2. Hand-Held Tools (Criteria 9.2)
 Safe Handling and Use: Hand-held tools must be used only for their intended purpose. Proper
grips and body positioning should be encouraged to reduce strain and prevent accidents.
 Maintenance and Inspection: Tools should be regularly inspected for wear and tear, damage, or
malfunction. Damaged tools should be removed from service until repaired.
 Training: Workers should be trained on the safe use of hand-held tools, including any associated
risks (e.g., sharp edges, electrical hazards).
 Ergonomics: Hand-held tools should be designed to minimize strain and fatigue, reducing risks
of injury during prolonged use.
3. Machinery Hazards (Criteria 9.3)
 Types of Hazards: Machinery can present a variety of hazards, including moving parts (e.g.,
blades, gears), electrical risks, noise, vibration, and exposure to extreme temperatures. Each of
these poses specific risks, like cuts, entanglement, burns, or repetitive strain injuries.
 Point of Operation Hazards: This refers to the area where a machine performs its task (e.g.,
cutting, shaping). Safeguards, such as barriers and interlocks, should be in place to prevent
access to hazardous areas during operation.
 Startup and Shutdown: The equipment should have clear, visible, and easy-to-reach controls for
starting and stopping, including emergency stop buttons.
4. Control Measures for Machinery (Criteria 9.4)
 Guarding and Barriers: Physical barriers, such as guards, should be placed around dangerous
parts of machinery to prevent accidental contact.
 Emergency Stop Controls: Equipment should be equipped with emergency stop devices that
are easily accessible and allow quick shutdown in case of an emergency.
 Lockout/Tagout Procedures: These procedures are essential during maintenance or repair.
Machines should be locked to prevent accidental startup, and a visible tag should indicate that the
machine is out of service.
 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): PPE such as gloves, goggles, hearing protection, and
respiratory masks should be provided and used as necessary.
 Training and Awareness: Workers must be trained to recognize machine hazards, understand
the purpose and operation of control measures, and know emergency procedures.
These measures aim to reduce workplace injuries and maintain a safe environment for all workers
handling or exposed to equipment and machinery.
