PORT PLANNING
INTRODUCTION
The planning of a new port or expansion or improvement of an existing one
requires may factors to be taken into consideration.

Port are primarily provided for the handling of cargo. Amongst the factors to be
considered are:
a) Nature of Cargoes to be handled
b) Sizes and types of vessels to be catered for
c) Method of cargo handling
d) Land use and operations
e) Land Access

• NATURE OF CARGOES TO BE HANDLED:
– General Cargoes

• Non unitized (Break Bulk) Cargoes

• Unitized Cargoes

– Bulk Cargoes

• Dry Bulk Cargoes

• Liquid Cargoe

TYPES OF VESSELS TO BE CATERED FO
– Types of Vessels
• General Cargo
• Container Vessel
• Roll-on roll-off
• Bulk cargo vessel
• Tankers

• Vessel Characteristics
– Ship layouts, including the locations and dimensions of ramps and hatches,
loaded and unloaded deck heights, superstructure positions and clearances for
dockside cranes.
– Handling characteristics of ships for manoeuvring and turning operations.
– Windage areas of ships to assess forces on berths.
– Ship mooring line sizes and capacities for bollard pulls
– Deck crane capacities and reaches.

• METHOD OF CARGO HANDLING
– Depend on the nature of the cargoes and the types of vessels likely to use the
port.
– The most important consideration is whether dockside cranes are required or
whether ships own lifting gear will be used for loading and unloading.
– Apart from cranes, fork-lift trucks for general cargo, container handling
equipment are used.

• LAND AREA
– Depends on
• Throughput of cargo
• Type of cargo
• Methods of cargo handling and
• Length of time cargo remains in the port.
– A container berth requires more land behind the berth to maximize the
throughput.
– With a general cargo area, part of the land will be utilized by transit
sheds and warehousing.
– In a container berth, the land area will largely be open for storage of
containers with sheds for filling and emptying containers.

Access can be either by road, rail or both, in the case of
liquid cargoes, by pipeline.
• Tugs and pilotage
• Security and policing services
• Fuel bunkering facilities
• Equipment maintenance facilities
• Services to ships-water, electricity, sewerage, telephone
• Rest room, canteens and offices, post offices etc.
