LECTURE - 01

LAYOUT OF PORTS
PORT:
– is a place where vessels may discharge or receive cargo
– it may be the entire harbour including its approaches
and anchorage or only the commercial part of a
harbour where the quays, wharves, facilities for
transfer of cargo, docks and repair shops are situated

HARBOUR:
– Any protected water area affording a place of safety for
vessels.

CHENNAI PORT
• Location
Latitude : 13o06’ N
Longitude : 80o18’ E
• This port has 3 docks : Dr.Ambedkar, Jawahar and
Bharathi Dock
• It has 23 berths
• Railway lines running up to 68 kms
• The major commodities handled at the port are
Containers, automobiles (export), POL, Iron Ore,
Fertilizers, General cargoes.

COCHIN PORT
The Port of Cochin is located on the South West Coast
of India, in the state of Kerala at 9o58’ N, 76o16’ E.

Cochin port is connected to its hinterland enlarging to


the state of Kerala, South Tamilnadu and South
Karnataka by National Highways NH 47
(Kanyakumari - Salem), NH49 (Cochin-Madurai) and
NH 17 (Cochin - Mumbai).

JAWAHARLAL NEHRU PORT TRUST (JNPT)

It is located at the eastern end of Mumbai in the Nhava


Sheva area and situated at Latitude 18º 56’ 43” N and
Longitude 72º56’ 24” E.

Port cargo handling facilities include container


terminals, a liquid handling terminal and a shallow
water berth which can handle break-bulk and
container traffic both.

KANDLA PORT
Location
Latitude : 23o01’ N
Longitude : 70o13’ E

Major Future Plan


- Addition of four Dry Cargo Berths - 13th to 16th with 8
MMTPA, draught of 14 m to be developed on BOT at a
cost of Rs.701 Crores.
- Offshore Berthing facility with 12 MMTPA at the cost of
Rs.882 Crores at Satellite Port of Tuna with 15 mtrs.

NEW MANGALORE PORT
• Location
Latitude : 120 55’ N
Longitude : 740 48’ E
• The Port has 14 berths, which includes 9 General Cargo
berths and 4 oil jetties.
• Handling liquid chemical through POL products,
containers and bulk cargoes like Granite stone, Timbers,
Coal, Coke, Iron Ore pellets, Fertilizers
• Largest LPG handling Port in India
• 3rd Largest POL handling Port in India

NEW MANGALORE PORT
VISAKHAPATNAM PORT
• Location:

Latitude : 170 41’ N


Longitude : 830 18’ E

• Import - Coking Coal, Steam Coal, Fertilizer, LAM &


Pet Coke

• Export - CP Coke, Steel Products, POL, Alumina,


Thermal Coal

TUTICORIN PORT
• Tuticorin Port is located on the South Eastern coast of
India at Latitude 8o 45'N and Longitude 78o 13'E.

• Imports - Timber logs, M.O.P., Urea, Rock phosphate,


Copper, Industrial coal, Containerized cargo etc.

• Exports - Sugar, Sand, Maize, Granite stone,


Sulphuric acid, const. material, Containerized cargo
etc.

TUTICORIN PORT
MUMBAI PORT

• Location
Latitude : 18o54’ N
Longitude : 72o49’ E

• It has three wet docks – Prince’s, Victoria and Indira


Dock

• There are 4 jetties at Jawahar Dweep, to handle crude


and POL tankers

PARADIP PORT
• Location
- Paradip port is situated 210 nautical miles south of
Calcutta and 260 nautical miles north of Visakhapatnam.
Latitude : 20°15'55.44" N
Longitude : 86°40'34.62“ E

• Commodity Handled - Thermal coal, Chrome ore,


Manganese ore, iron ore, charge chrome, ferro chrome,
ferro manganese, steel coils, project cargo, Coking coal,
hard coke, lime stone, food grains, fertilizer, DBM, steel
billets, scrap, clinkers

PARADIP PORT
MORMUGOA PORT
• The port is approximately 370 kms south of Mumbai
and 300 kms North of New Mangalore and 575 km
north of Kochi.
• Location:
Latitude : 15o25’ N
Longitude : 73o47’ E

• It is an open type harbour protected by a breakwater


and a mole built from the outer end of the breakwater
and running parallel to the quay.
