RCS 103: CALCULUS

This is a closed-book examination. Textbooks/Reference books/notes are not permitted.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
This examination paper consists of Questions in Section A followed by Section B.
Answer Question 1 in section A and any Other Two questions in section B.

QUESTIONS in ALL Sections should be answered in the answer booklet(s).

2. Keep your phone(s) switched off at the front of the examination room.
3. Keep ALL bags and caps at the front of the examination room and DO NOT refer to
ANY unauthorized material before or during the course of the examination.

5. Marks indicated in parenthesis, i.e. ( ) will be awarded for clear and logical answers.

7. For the Questions, write the number of the question on the answer booklet(s) in the

Question Two (20 marks)

a) Suppose the total cost in dollars incurred each week by Polaraire for
manufacturing x refrigerators is given by the total cost function
C(x) = 8000 + 200x – 0.2x2 (0  x  400)
i. What is the actual cost incurred for manufacturing the 251st
refrigerator? (2 marks)

a) The total weekly production cost £C for a particular product is given

when x units are produced per week. The advertising cost £ Ca

resulting from the sale of these x units, are given by:

CA = 18x + 0.1 x3 + 750


R = 340 x - 2.25x2

b) Show that the inverse of the function y = ex is given by ln x. Hence or

b) i) Sketch the function f(x) = √x for 0 ≤ x ≤ 9

ii) Determine the area between f(x) and the x-axis for 1 ≤ x ≤ 9
(5 marks)

c) The curve f(x) = √x is now revolved about the y-axis for 0 ≤ y ≤ 3. Find
the volume of the solid generated.
