ISO Major - Assignment - 2024
ISO Major - Assignment - 2024
1
Introduction
In this assignment, you will work in groups of 3 to 4 students. You are responsible for forming and
managing your own groups. Groups must be formed within your workshop. Each group member is
to participate in the group work actively and continuously.
The Major Assignment Proposal Submission: is due on Friday of Week 7 – 13 September 2024.
The Major Assignment Report is due on Friday of Week 13 - 28 October 2024.
Weighting percentage:
This assignment is worth 40% of total marks for this unit.
The Future of Work assignment will involve in identifying an organisation, analysing information
systems concepts, modelling the work/business processes involved in the organisation and describing
various scenarios of how the information systems might change the organisation in the future. Today,
artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping every industry, profession and life and will continue to have a
profound impact on our future. Use of generative AI has nearly doubled in the last six months, with
75% of global knowledge workers using it. Read the article AI at work is here to get an overview of
how jobs are predicted to change as AI evolves. There are various insights published by World
Economic Forum that you can follow.
Start your analysis by conducting research to understand the nature of the job you have chosen. You
might interview people working in the profession you have chosen to understand the job in depth to
complete the assignment. Your initial objective is to be able to model the ‘as-is’ situation of the job
using Rich Picture. You should for example identify the activities that limit productivity the most.
Once you have gained a good understanding of the job you have chosen, you should systematically
evaluate the potential of different kinds of information systems that could be applied to improve
the job. The different types of information systems that could provide a solution should include the
weekly topics e.g. Decision making, online business, business intelligence, enterprise computing
(ERP, SCM, CRM), cloud computing, self-service, etc. The solutions for improvement at a high level
could be grouped as: automation, information management or transformation. Considering the level
of digital embeddedness with AI-empowered digital work, the assignment needs to clearly
demonstrate the change in the work using AI. An example is detailed in the following article:
Reconfiguring digital embeddedness in hybrid work: The case of employee experience
management platforms (John et al., 2024).
Synthesise your analysis based on how you see the job at some time in the future. The time frame is
flexible and may be five to ten years into the future. Tell a story to describe the change from the old
state to the new. There could be a number of options or scenarios that you could explore.
2
The topics and questions below have been provided as a starting point to selecting a solution for your
selected employment category. Consider if solutions in these areas could improve the job. You should
consider each of these areas and undertake an analysis to determine if solutions in those areas would
be suitable for the employment category selected. Your report does not have to follow the headings
exactly because it should be customised to best present the findings of your analysis (e.g. some topics
may not be relevant for your job, other topics may need more detail than the questions provided).
You are to draw and label a model (as-is) using rich picture to demonstrate your understanding of the
job you have chosen. Your objective is to help the reader understand the nature of the job (do not
assume others will know). It is suggested you present:
• A description of the organisational context (what the business does, organisational structure).
• The roles, stakeholders, thoughts and concerns
• Rich picture to illustrate the ‘as-is’ model
• Identify where the high value activities are of the job
You can use MS Visio (as found in the University labs) or a tool of your choice to draw the models.
• What type of E-business model (or models) is currently being employed in this job?
• Discuss what type of E-business model (or models) could be deployed or expanded in the
future to create high value activities in this job? Suggest at least two examples.
• For each of the e-business models discussed above, briefly discuss potential security issues
surrounding each e-business model that this organisation needs to be aware of, and why it is
important.
• List examples of data that the job may collect in areas of business for operational,
management, and strategic purposes.
• For each areas of business, state two important business decisions that organisations might
make based on the derived information from that area’s data.
• What types of enterprise computing are commonly used in the job you are studying?
• Which enterprise computing applications have the most potential to improve the job you are
studying?
For example:
Identify and discuss two ways that enterprise systems can increase sales from its existing
customers; Identify and discuss two ways to get new customers over the next six months; and List
and briefly discuss two ways current technology can be used to improve customer support for this
organisation.
Please ensure that you reflect on the level of AI-empowered digital work and the level of digital
embeddedness that will re-configure the digital work in each section.

Group Selection and Topic Selection:
Please choose a group for the major assignment - before Friday Week 7 – 13/09/2024.
The groups for this assignment are under the “Major Assignment” category on Canvas.
Self sign up for groups will be closed on the day listed above. If you have any issues with sign up or
your group composition, please contact the unit convener or Lecturer as soon as possible. The longer
you delay, the less that can be done to resolve any issues!
Groups for this assignment are limited to a maximum of 4 students per group, with no exceptions.
Please note that this assignment is intended for groups of 3-4 students, so students in groups smaller
than 4 students should expect that more effort and time is required to accomplish equivalent grades.
No consideration will be given for groups comprising less than 3 students.
Undergraduate students (6348) should form a group with other undergraduate students only –
groups “6348 ISO 1” to “6348 ISO 20”
Graduate students (9503) should form a group with other graduate students only – groups “9503
MISG 1” to “9503 MISG 5”
It is each student’s responsibility to organise their group – the tutors and unit conveners will not
assist you in finding or joining a group. You may wish to use the Canvas Discussion forums to
help find a group.
Once you know your group members, discuss and decide on a topic of choice and write a Project
Proposal. The proposal is a short summary of less than 500 words that identify the organisation
that you would like to study, the job that you would like to explore more on and the significance
of this project to the community. The proposal should also have the group member details. Please
submit the proposal by Friday week 7 – 13th September 2024.
1. A member of the existing group emails the unit convener with the group number,
full name, and student ID of the student to be added (this is to ensure that the correct
student is added to the correct group)
2. The unit convener manually adds the student into the existing group and emails all
students in the group to confirm the addition
4
PLEASE NOTE: The unit convener will not add any students to existing groups without an
email from an existing group member (this is to ensure the group has accepted the new student
into the group)
1. A student emails the unit convener with a list of the full names and student IDs of all
students to be included in the new group, and the case study chosen.
2. The unit convener manually sets up a new group with the listed students and emails
all students to confirm the new group
Any emails that do not follow the above processes will not be actioned.
Any changes in groups after the week 7 deadline will be difficult unless any exemptional scenarios.
Any students not in a group by this date will be assumed to be completing the assignment individually
and will thus be placed into a group of 1 student only. Any last-minute changes requested after
week 10 will result in a mark penalty of 10% of the available marks for the students involved.
This deadline is imposed as changes to group allocations after assignments have started to be
submitted can cause issues with Canvas submissions and grading, so groups need to be finalised in
advance of any assignments being submitted. This mark penalty will apply for only the students
whose group allocations are changed – for example, if one student changes from one group to another,
only that student will receive the mark penalty. Other students in both groups whose group allocates
are not changed will not be penalised.
Report Structure
The following is a structure that you might adopt for your report:
• Cover sheet (1 mark)
