Clinical Field Experience A: Shaping School Culture Interview and Observation

At Combs High School, we prioritize academic excellence, student support, and

motivation. Our mission is to build a strong community through quality education and social

connections. We value community partnerships and celebrate diversity to help students achieve

their best. Through our unique P.A.C.K. Mentality, symbolizing the teamwork of coyotes, we

empower everyone to embody its core values (Loftis, 2024). Recently, I spoke with the Math

Department Chair at the high school who is introducing the P.A.C.K. Mentality at Freshman

Orientation and other school events. I also interviewed the Assistant Principal on his insight on

school improvement and incorporating the mission and vision.

Interviews

Jessica Furman, the Math Department Chair, was the first person I interviewed for this

observation. She integrates the school’s mission, vision, and P.A.C.K. Mentality into all her

classes, emphasizing these values with her students. At the start of each academic year, each

class period defines its unique vision and code, tailored to that specific group while

encompassing elements of the school’s vision and the P.A.C.K. Mentality. Mrs. Furman

explained that this vision and code act as a living document, open to updates and revisions each

quarter. If a particular aspect is not effective or if a P.A.C.K Mentality standard is achieved, they

progress to the next letter and its associated standards. According to PSEL Standard 1 (e),

educators should regularly review and adapt the school’s mission and vision to align with

evolving expectations and opportunities for the school, as well as the changing needs and

circumstances of the students, striving for continual improvement. (National Policy Board for

Educational Administration, 2015)

Carl Hill serves as the Assistant Principal responsible for overseeing the Freshman and

Sophomore students, school dances, and campus facilities. With a tenure of over a decade at the

high school Mr. Hill has held various roles including teacher, coach, Science Department Chair,

Dean of Students, and currently, Assistant Principal. He plays a crucial role in upholding the

school’s vision by ensuring safety protocols are current, supervising both staff and students and

handling student disciplinary matters. Mr. Hill emphasizes the importance of aligning his actions

with the school’s vision, code of conduct, and P.A.C.K. Mentality to set all students on the path

to success post-graduation. Following the PSEL Standard 1(g), he leads by example in

embodying and promoting the school’s mission, vision, and core values across all facets of his

leadership role (National Policy Board for Educational Administration, 2015).

Implications for Future Practice

My discussions with Combs High School staff have been truly inspiring. I ai to engage

local businesses to embody PSEL Standard (f), fostering a common understanding of the

school’s mission, vision, and principles among students and the community (National Policy

Board for Educational Administration, 2015). Effective communication is key to building trust

and nurturing relationships within the school and the community. The school’s goal is to nurture

students’ growth and autonomy. Together, we can create a. positive environment for students to

excel academically and engage with the community.
