PERFORMANCE TEST ON RECIPROCATING PUMP

AIM:
To study the characteristics of a reciprocating pump at various head and discharge to obtain the
pump characteristics.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:
 Reciprocating pump
 Stopwatch
 Pressure gauge
 Vacuum gauge

CALCULATION:

1. Discharge:
Area of Tank =0.4×0.4m2 = 0.16m2
Rise of level (h) =10 cm = 0.1m
Volume of collected = A×h m3 =0.016m3
Time taken for 10 cm rise of water = t secs
Discharge Q = Volume / Time= 0.016 / t m3/s

2. Head
Total head H = 10(P+V/760) m of water

3. Output of pump
Pump output =(9.81×Q×H) kW

4. Input of pump
Energy meter constant, K =1200 revs per kW
Time taken for 10 pulses of Energy meter = T secs
Input to motor =(3600×10)(K×T) kW
Efficiency of motor = 80% assumed
= [3600×10×0.8 /1200×T] kW
= (24 / T) kW
Pump input =Motor output
= (24 / T) kW

5. Pump Efficiency
Pump efficiency = Pump Output/ Pump Input
TABULATION:

2. Actual discharge, Qact = ______m3/s
3. Output power from the pump , Po = ______ kW
4. Total head, H = ______m of water
5. Co-efficient of discharge ,Cd = ______
PERFORMANCE TEST ON CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
AIM:
To conduct a test on a single stage centrifugal pump at various head and discharge to obtain the
pump characteristics.
APPARATUS REQUIRED:
 Centrifugal pump
 Stopwatch

CALCULATION:
1. Discharge:
Area of tank =0.5×0.5 m2
Rise of level (h) = 10 cm =0.1 m
Volume of collected =A×h m3 =0.025 m3
Time taken for 10 cm rise of water = t secs
Discharge Q = Volume / Time= 0.025 / t ( m3/s)

2. Head
