For each problem, draw appropriate labeled sketches, show a clear solution procedure, and present
the final results in appropriate units. The data tables used for any properties should be clearly cited.
Remember to use the specified problem solving format, and to include your name on any additional
pages.

1. Nitrogen (N2) is accelerated in a well-insulated nozzle. The inlet temperature is 265 K and
the exit temperature is 235 K. The inlet pressure is 300 kPa and the exit pressure is
150 kPa. The exit velocity is 275 m/s and the mass flow rate is 20 kg/s.
a. Determine the inlet velocity.
b. Determine the exit area.
(25 pts)
2. A steady flow device compresses 700 lbm/hr of saturated vapor R134a at 30 psia
adiabatically and reversibly (no friction) to a pressure of 160 psia.
a. Sketch the process on a temperature-specific entropy diagram
b. Find the required compressor power (Btu/hr and hp) to accomplish this.
(25 pts)
3. A steam-filled piston-cylinder device with initial volume of 2 m3 contains saturated vapor
at 1000 kPa. It is compressed at constant pressure until it contains a 50/50 mixture of
saturated liquid and saturated vapor.
a. Sketch the process on a pressure-specific volume diagram
b. Determine the final volume.
c. Determine the work done.
d. EXTRA Credit (4 pts) – Determine the amount of heat transferred.

4. Water at 5C is pumped from reservoir A, which is at atmospheric pressure, to reservoir B,
which is at 400 kPa (gage). The flow rate is 0.1 m3/s (velocity of 5.66 m/s) and the pipe has
an inside diameter of 15 cm. The piping system is cast iron with threaded fittings as shown.
The inlet and exit are sharp-edged. The piping system also includes 4 90 degree standard
elbows, 4 fully open gate valves, and 200 meters of pipe.
a. Determine the friction factor in the pipe and show the process on the attached
Moody diagram
b. Determine the power required to pump the water
