Grade 8- Notes
Lesson 1 – Networking concepts
Answer the following :

1.What is Networking ? Give some common relevant examples.

Networking is the interconnection of a group of computers and other peripheral

devices so that they can share data and hardware resources. For example, LAN,
MAN, WAN.

2. List some advantages of Networking.

a) Data can be shared on a central computer.

b) It reduces the cost of hardware as hardware resources can be shared.

c) Updating of data is done at a single point.

d) It reduces the need of hard copies, as soft copies can be shared.

3. Differentiate between LAN and WAN.

LAN WAN
In LAN, two or more computers and This type of network connects two or
peripheral devices are connected within more computers located at far away
a small area, such as room, office places.
building or a campus
In Local Area Network, computers are In Wide Area Network, computers are
connected to each other through wires. connected to each other through
Satellite signals.
The data transmission speed in LAN is Data transmission speed is faster as
slower than WAN. compared to LAN.

4.What do you understand by network security?

Network Security means protecting data and resources from any unauthorised
access. Since many users are accessing the same data, so we must ensure that
only the authorised persons can access or modify data. There are two levels of
network security. There are two levels of network security: a) Login security b)
Rights security.

5. Differentiate between peer to peer architecture and Client server

architecture.
Peer to Peer networks have nodes connected to each other but do not have
servers.

In client-server architecture, several computers called clients or workstations are

connected to the main computer called the server. Clients send request to server
in order to share data and other resources with it.

6. What are the requirements needed to form a wired LAN network?

The requirements needed to form a wired LAN are:
 Computers
 Network Interface Card(LAN Card)
 A Network Software
 Ethernet cables.
 Hub/Switch

7.What are the requirements needed to form a wireless computer network?

The requirements need to setup a wireless LAN are:
 Computers
 A wireless network Interface Card.
 A wireless networking switch (Access Point)

8.Define the following terms:

1. WAP: WAP Stands for Wireless Access Point ,It connects wireless
communication devices to form a wireless network.

2. Bluetooth: Bluetooth is a wireless technology used to interconnect mobile

phones, computers, printers, using short-range wireless connection.
3. Server: A Server is a computer that provides services to clients and controls
access to hardware, software and other resources.

4. Node: Node is a computer that participates in a network as well as it works

independently.

9.What is a Data center explain briefly?

Data centers are centralized locations where computing and networking

equipment is concentrated for the purpose of collecting, storing, processing,
distributing or allowing access to large amounts of data. They provide important
services such as data storage, backup and recovery, data management and
networking.
